AFR sensor placment

I am about to install the AEM AFR Gauge. The instructions say to mount the sensor 36" from the turbo or as far away as possible if you do not have 36", but before the catalytic converter. With our rear engine cars, I think we have about 2-3 inches between the turbo and the cat. Can anyone that has been through this shed some light on placement of the sensor bung? There is concern that if too close to the turbo, it may fail quickly. Can it go after the cat? AEM says "no", must be before the cat.

Thanks for this post John. My installer was asking about placement. He didn't have the instructions as I bought the AEM used *** part of the "A" pillar. He seemed concerned about only monitoring 1 side of the engine?

AFR gauge should be no less than 6 inches down stream of the turbo.

Stephen,

Thank you for the placement advice. AEM says they have varying success with the sensor life at less than 36" from the turbo. They claim some work fine and some blow quickly? I guess I'll find out.

Mike,

I had the same concerns as your installer. I am going to use the Zeitronix datalogger with the Zeitronix AFR sensor on one side and the AEM on the other side. The AEM analog output will then be connected to the Zeitronix user (extra) port. With this set-up, I should be able to datalog both sides at the same time, while maintaining a visual of one side on the AEM gauge. The Zeitronix also has a visual digital readout and an adjustable alarm threshold. I will set it to light up and beep, if the AFR goes outside acceptable levels.
