for some strange reason... i always drove into puddles a little faster than i normally would with my mercedes because i felt confident with my p-car. so i assume this "hit water- hold steering wheel, and the car goes whever it wants" doesn't happen with OEM tire sizing right?

My RA1's on BBS Racing Wheels [F18x8.5 (245) and R18x12 (335)] have been surprisingly good in the rain. First 2 weeks I had the new wheels/tires on it rained so I got a quick introduction. I was a little nervous as this is my first experience with R compound rubber. The channels on the RA1's look significantly deeper than the pilot sports.

You can go with the step lip configuration by HRE & DPE to avoid the vibrations while driving in the rain. The only other solutions I can think of is - not to drive in the rain or purchase a set of wheels that are not with that type of lip setup (ie BBS).

This thread seems to have 2 seperate topics at once that are getting confussed by some:
1: Wheel balance shake caused by reverese lip wheels retaining rain-water
2: hydroplaining in standing water caused by tire tread pattern and width.
The two have noting to do with eachother; your wheel choice has no affect in hydroplaining, just as your tire choice has no affect on wheel vibration caused by #1 above.
Wheel diameter (18" vs 19") has little effect, if any, on either issue.
My 19" HRE's would sometimes shake in heavy rain, but hitting the brakes would clear the water from the drums. No problem.
I had PS2s on them and they seems to like the rain, no problem w/ hydroplaining in heavy rain at speeds below 100...that I recall.
