Rear Spoiler Failure

I was at the dealer today for a warranteed headlight replacement ($1200!!! whoa!!). Well after it was done, the service manager asked for a ride in the KPVTT. Of course I obliged. His name is Troy (great guy!) and this is Flemington Porsche (Big BMW population, small Porsche population).
Well, we pulled out onto the highway and made our way down the road. 75 mph.......Rear Spoiler Failure!!!
Man!!! What is up with that? I checked the fuse and it is fine. Does anyone have any ideas??

Once we got down the road a bit, I let it rip. Once I saw his hand reach for the arm reast on the door (at 150mph) I slowed briefly and told him I would demo the brakes. In what felt like 100 feet, we were doing 55mph again. You gotta love these cars!!!!
Porsche............there is no substitute.

Now, how about some ideas regarding the rear spoiler failure.

Failed microswitches in the rear spoiler? It was a known problem in the earlier cars and generally occurred soon after the car had been washed.

The Porsche tech said they were one of three to five things that needed to be checked. Do you know where they are and how to check them?

EDIT: I found this quote on another forum:

richwjenn 11/20/02 09:56 AM I had this problem about 12 months ago. Spoiler failure light would come when spoiler went up and the spoiler would not go back down until the car was shut-off for a bit. I too thought it was the harness connector.

Turns out was the upper limit microswitch on the spoiler failing intermittently. The microswitches are hardwired into the harness and my dealer was about to cut them out and replace when I asked them to wait and check with PCNA. Turns out this is a somewhat common problem and PCNA insisted that the ENTIRE spoiler unit (hydraulics, harness, switches, etc) be replaced. They got one overnight and the problem has never happened again.
And this:

GregH 11/18/02 08:51 PM I've been battling this intermittent problem for over a year, and have "just been living with it." It usuually happens 1st time I drive the car after it has sat for a while. Rarely the spoiler sticks up after shutdown; most of the time it functions normally (except for the warning light.) Shutdown/restart corrects.

WAY back when someone said the harness connector was at fault - I did once correct the issue for many miles by grabbing and wiggling this connector (which runs up under the left rear quarter (inside the engine compartment) to the deck lid. Warning - it is hard to reach, and in my contortions I planted my shin squarely on the exhaust tip, receiving a dusey of a burn in the process.

Someone else reported their problem was finally diagnosed as a faulty microswitch, but Porsche wanted the entire assembly swapped out.

Why does it go up and down anyway, why not just leave it up?

I have also heard that if you shot some lube down the cylinders of the spoiler of a TT can fix the problem,I can't remember what type of lube, but I know that it is not WD-40 because of corrosion problems.

What was wrong with the headlight to cause a replacement of the entire unit???

Can't offer any advice on the spoiler, mine is fixed as you know... If you try the lubricant method, I would use spray silicone.

GT-2 wing--the only time it moves is when you want to adjust it. Plus it looks so darn good. I know this doesn't help one bit but I couldn't resist. we're all family.

OK guys. This is what I know so far. When I push the spoiler button with the car engine off, I can hear the electric motor that is supposed to drive the hydraulic pump running but the pistons do not move the wing up. If I pull up on the wing at each piston without the electric motor running (key out of ignition) the wing can be moved up under a seemingly spring load. It springs back down to the rest position. Because of this I don't think the pistons are sticking.
What is the problem? Is the hydraulic pump bad?
I really need some input guys!!!

I have an appointment at the dealer for this week but I am nervous about leaving the car there. I have alwways done my own work and the thought of them messing with the wing scares me. I like the Porsche Tech, Tommy. He has always been very good and knowledgable. I guess it is my own **** retentiveness.

If I hear the motor running and the pistons are not binding yet the wing doesn't lift, it sure sounds like the hydraulic pump is the culprit.

Can anyone share any insight here?
