My stereo did the SAME THING a few months ago too. I took it to the dealer and it was the CD Changer that was broke. The dealer told me that on the 03+ models the new fiber optics system shuts everything down if something goes wrong within the loop. They installed a new CD Changer under warranty and it works perfect.
I hope this helps....

my last 3 porsches have done this (986, 996 series). the amp does need to be replaced but you can usually just turn the car off, lock the doors and then unlock and then restart the car. 9 out of 10 times this will work. however, it happened again in my turbo last week and it took a few series of this routine to get it to work again.
good luck - if your car is out of warranty, i wouldn't buy a new amp. i'm sure it's some coin
