Could be the tyres, but don't blame Pirelli.
My 2001 996tt came with OEM Pirelli's with 16000Km.
Very noisy and poor performance.I was told that old tyres become hard and lose performance, even if tread is still ok.Changed to MPS2Cup and noise was worse(Ok it is a track tyre so it was expected).
Now have Pirelli Rosso's and couldn't be happier, very quiet and road performance in both and dry is excellent.

Replaced my OEM Pirelli's at 11K, and STILL had the noise - it was the left front wheel bearing, replaced at 11.9K miles. Sounded just like tire tread whine. Now I read about how common it is - what is it about the design of the front wheel bearings on these cars? - I have never had to replace wheel bearings on any car with mileage below 100K........

my yokohamas were REALLY loud in the beginning, but I found out that the inner rear of the tires were completely worn...These were amazingly loud...maybe not as loud as you are describing....but still very annoying...the thing is, the outside of the rear tires looked near new...so...check that out and if its not that, do as ILLm3 and other's said and get someone to check out your wheel bearings...
