How much horsepower is required......
.....to go over 200mph in a 996tt?
All this talk of CGTs driving around at 200mph has got me back on this subject. I'm not sure how crazy the rest of you are, got a pretty good idea though . But it is a dream of mine to drive at 200mph+ in my own car one day, it's not gonna last long I know, there are not many places around to do this speed for sustained periods and I know finding the right place and road conditions are as important as having your car setup to do it. But with my new 996tt coming I'm hoping I'm going to be in a situation to try it.
My guess would be between 500-550bhp, anyone tried or achieved this in a 996tt yet?

Well if a 450bhp X50 will give you 189mph and a RUF 590, assuming it's outputing 590bhp, will give you 212mph and the horsepower to mph increase is linear between the two (which I doubt it is) then you will need 517bhp to hit a true 200mph.
It's gonna be close

You can do some aerodynamic "mods" to help you get there. Tape up all body seams (especially on the front of the car), take off exterior side-view mirrors and windshield wipers. Ideally you want the ride height as low as possible without compromising the integrity of the suspension. All of these things will increase your top speed without adding hp...something to consider.

So.. you can drive over 200 MPH LEGAL every year in Nevada. If fact they have a club. Very easy to do the event. Something like $500 and drive 130 miles flat out... Sprinting to 140-160 is very different than holding 180+ for 130 miles. Beware, it's highly stressfull on boosted cars. Sustaining 20+PSI for a long time adds tremedous amounts of heat. I saw alot of broken/melted boosted cars.

It's really fun though.. like Autobahn for the USA

Depends if you want to go 200 mph based on your speedo display or REALLY go that fast. A change in gearing, rev limiter and/or MUCH bigger tires would be required even if you had the power to push it that fast.

Increasing HP does not increase speed it only makes the car quicker. To go faster you have to either change gearing or raise the rev limiter. The Ruf is able to go that fast because they change gearing.
