What's the most cost effective way to get 600hp?

I have a '01 996tt (K16's) and have been looking at the various spnsor sites on the right of the screen, with the various "kits" and "packages". Assuming starting from bone stock (K16's), what is the most cost effective way to get 600hp at the flywheel?

180hp shot of Nozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz = 500 bucks

Not meant to be a snotty comment, but why spend money on a supercar worth well over $100k new and then try to skimp on the mods? I don't see any reason/logic in that?

You can look for the cheapest solution, but will that really be a good use of your time? Slapping together parts and pieces from all over the place will get you to the 600 number, but let the buyer beware, and good luck with any support from a vendor...

Loaded question - there are a zillion ways to do it.

I think he has a valid question...isn't this everyone's question after they have had stage2 for a while? The most cost effective way would probably be either changing to K24 turbos (X50, Turbo-S, GT2) or K16/K24 hybrids. Of course you will also need ecu tuning, intake or air filter upgrade, and a high flow exhaust system. All of the tuner's packages have their merits.

jimmer is right...NOS would be the cheapest way to get there. Done right it is reasonably safe and as a bonus it will cool the intake charge. Not many 996TT owners choose to go this route.

edit:
on second thought, there is another problem. Many are not happy to stay at 600...then the cost to gain more includes the money already spent. Bottom line, it's NOT cost effective.

if you take the appropriate view of costs (long-term, including support)
your best bet is to go with a respected, proven tuner package that has
power specifications you want. Between the several such tuners, there
may be some price differential. Also consider the value of how near the
tuner is to you, or at least whether they have a long relationship with
the local shop that will do your install.

Buy a new Viper! j/k

Seeing as you are in Nevada you are probably closest to Evoms which will bring something to the table. Otherwise there is Protomotive which is another good choice.

supercup is infamous around these parts
You should also consider UMW 3 a package. You can have Peterson/White lightning shop in your town install and maintain. Having someone local do the work is worth a lot when you need things addressed or want to move up to the next level.

Another optoin to consider is sell your car and buy a car with the mods you like already in place. Most likely you will pay $0.25 on the dollar for the mods.

Good luck with a decision.

1: Protomotive 700, 2: GIAC 700. Both are proven packages.

Jags911tt -- Thanks for noticing. I am thinking of 600hp at the flywheel, not 700hp. I appreciate all the input from everyone. My intention is not to scrimp and save all the pennies that I can while trying to add more hp. I just figure that many on this board have been through a couple of different tuner packages on their way to the power they currently have, and would likely have thoughts on how to get to 600hp without spending a lot on intermediate steps.

I have my eye on the Ultimate Motor Werks Stage 2 turbos. Kevin tells me it is a hybrid K16/24 with a larger compressor. I would like as little lag as possible, but I'm not sure I need the "zero clearance" option. Any thoughts?

its worth the ZC.... I had stage 5 know.

protomotive offers a nice k24/18s turbo with option to upgrade without need for another set of turbos...

evoms offers k16/24 stage 4 and a gt640 package as well.
