Exhaust swap on 996tt: Remove the rear bumper?

Exhaust swap on 996tt: Remove the rear bumper?

Must the rear bumper be removed when swapping exhausts? Approx. time/cost for the job? Can it be done DIY?

you can do it without removing the rear bumper. The first time I did it, being slow and cautious was realistically about 6 hrs- with many stops and breaks . The second time was about 2 hrs with no stops or breaks .

There is a very good write up on the Imagine Auto website.

not sure how much it would cost to do it professionally but otherwise with the proper tools, creeper, jack and stands, it is an doable project.

no need to remove bumper and yes you can do it in the garage but PITA.
shop cost about $500.

Probably depends on the exhaust brand. My AWE did not require it. Once off, it's recommended you consider changing the sparks and DVs. GL.

There's only one or two exhausts out of all of them that are a lot easier to do with the bumper off but 9/10 times you never need to. Which exhaust is it?

It is not a bad job. The Imagine Auto description is what I used, and I would recommend using a little penetrating oil on the turbo to cat bolts the night before. Mine came off easily doing that. From there making sure you get the O2 sensor wires in the right spot was the only other issue.

I thought it was a fairly easy do it yourself project.

I think it makes it a lot easier (esp. with FVD Exhausts which I have the most experience removing/installing). Only takes me about 10 mins to remove the bumper and 10 mins to put it back on!

I was intimidated to remove rear bumper, but if bumper is that easy to remove, it would make the exhuast removal alot easier. I have done it myself
way too many times. (3)

Two of us installed an FVD exhaust w/o removing the bumper. +1 on the penetrating oil on the turbo/cat bolts. Since neither one of us had done this before it took a little longer, 2-3 hrs, a lot longer if you include going to lunch .

I also used the Image Auto DIY instructions. Two people make it much easier than just a one person job.

I just had my exhaust put on by a local shop and they charged me $250 for the swap. Dropped the car off in the morning before work and picked it up after work. Just wasn't worth doing it myself for that price.

remove the bumper makes the job easier.

Looks pretty accurate to me. Be sure to read a few posts down for step 3.5 for strap removal. I did mine with the rear bumper off so I could see everything, but is not necessary and it is very easy - I did mine by myself in my garage... Old exhaust is way heavy, so be careful....
