King is infamous around these parts
Is the 996tt engine similar to the 993?

Is it (996tt) a similar engine block as the 993 with water cooled heads?

Also is the standard non turbo 996 engine the same/similar as a Boxter engine?

A local mechanic told me the 996tt was bullet proof/mod friendly but the (non tt / Boxter) not so much...

Thanks

For what it is worth, when I tore down my 996tt engine for the current rebuild, the rods have a 993 part number and I sold the crank and rods to a 993 owner who was building a spare aircooled engine. As far as I know, the bottom end is very similar if not the same. I dont believe there was a production 993 that used watercooled heads although they did use that system on the 959 and some race cars IIRC. Kevin

The case and lower end are 964 numbers and is essentialy the same as 94 3.6T
except those motors had 964 rods which are stronger than the 993 rods now used.

The 964,993,996TT,997TT and all the GT2 and GT3 engines are basically the same expect for the water cooled heads on the 996-997 engines. These are as close to bullet proof as you can get with a Porsche motor. The Boxster, Cayman, 996na and 997na engines are all the same and designed for mass production. While this motor is a modern design, there have been many problems with pre MY01 motors.
