And yes...I've driven the Z, I was unimpressed.
And yes...my car is modded, I'm just answering the OP, besides, I waxed modded Zs too

The Z06 is a phenomenal car. My buddy Ricky has one with some mods that I did a thread on a couple of months back. I was VERY impressed. It was fast a **** (definately faster than my car)
With that said, I did manage to pass and put some distance between me and the aformentioned yellow one at the track, on a couple of different track days and several different sessions in the advanced group. He was on slicks and had some mods, I was on street PS2's with an agressive track alignment and my car lowered a bit, otherwise stock 996 GT3.

I want to emphasize what other have posted. In the I-beat-him or he-beat-him world of track time comparisons, in many cases the winner is determined by driver skill, not the car's capabilities. A pro driver in a Miata
would probably beat me around the 'Ring in my 996.
I had both a Vette and the Porsche for a month. Each morning I had 2 sets of keys to choose from. I *always* chose the Porsche keys. The Vette is sold.

This is the 1st time I've discussed it, so the only thing I'm beating is more Z06s

I honestly can't believe this thread... If you want the fastest car bar none (shy of spending over 200K) go buy the z06. But for many its not just outright speed that makes a good car. For many the fit/finish, driving feel and legacy of Porsche is exactly what we need, and for others its the american muscle of the corvette Z06. Different strokes for different folks, there will always be someone faster mind as well get what you truely love.

So...to answer the original post's question; there are several freshly spanked Z06's running around

Luis (in his GT3) and I waxed one (on slicks, with mods) on the roadcourse earlier this year. Look at that body roll

Also, how much track time does the guy in the Z06 have compared to you? That could make a huge difference. What was the track temp that day? What about air temp? That could have made your turbos run better.
This one time at band camp, I beat the living **** out of a turbo and a GT3 in a regular C6 on track tires. Both of them were running Pilot Sport Cups and I was on Victoracer V710's. How do you explain that?

Both are great cars....I have a saying...."What your car can do and what your car can do with you driving it are two completely different things"

It is a given that stock for stock the 996 turbo is no match for the C6Z06, it was made to whoop up on the C5Z06. If we were talking X-50 that may be a decent comparison, but still no real match.
BUT........ since that is not the title of this thread.
- It does not take 700 hp to beat a C6Z, more like 600hp. (mine only has 550-580 and I run toe to toe with a modded C6Z (500 rwhp)
- The Z06 is NOT easier to drive at the limit than the turbo, it's flat so steering and pointing it is easier but the AWD of the turbo is much easier to push to the limit, not to mention better turning radius. The AWD is much of the reason the turbo is so much heavier than the Z06 so it must be counted as an advantage for the turbo while the weight a disadvantage.
- The Z06 is not exactly durable either, cracked rotors, seizing engines, flying roofs, inhaling stickers into intake, breaking rear ends, just to name a few. I would take the turbo (even a used one) for durability over the Z06 in a hot second.
- It takes quite a bit of extra cash to make the 996 turbo compete with the Z on the track but it's possible, I spanked an experienced driver with hoosiers on his car when I had terrible pirellis on my car. In fact the only Z06 to beat me to date is a 630 rwhp Z06 shop car with built motor and former pro driver and he runs 4 secs/lap quicker than me (a number which will get smaller real soon) (2.54 mile course)
