I would not stay at the Plaza. I went there for a couple of nights last month and the place is really in need of updating...or as we say here...."mods'.
I changed rooms three times and was never happy. I checked out first thing the next morning...

since its your first time in NYC I would stay at the W time Square. your in the heart of everything..just dont valet your porsche there.. I assume your flying to NYC. There are tons of good resturants so you should not have a problem. If you want to sit at any restuant in the city and they say that they are full..then its time to get the 20's out and start greaseing people.

I lived in NYC for a few years, and tried many of the Steakhouses. Back in the day Peter Luger's in Brooklyn was definitely the best that I had. I thought Sparks, The Palm, Smith & Wollensky were all over-rated. For Chinese I liked Shun Lee across from the Lincoln center, or they have Shun Lee Palace in Midtown East. For Sushi you have Nobu (but very expensive)
Italian you might want to head down to Little Italy & Mulberry. Food is good (though other high end italian all over the city) butt he ambiance of Little Italy is kind've fun.

So funny how many "ABSOLUTE BEST Steak houses" there are! You cant go wrong with any of the choices, they're all great.
No one really mentioned italian.... If you dont care about price and truly want the best italian, IL Mulino and Scaleni Fedeli are the ABSOLUTE BEST...no question. You'll have a tough time getting a reservation at IL Mulino...but you must try Scaleni Fedeli as a second or even first choice!
As Dan Mentioned...Blue Ribbon Sushi is great....also...Nobu Next door has very good eats...very laid back and you can usually just stroll in as they dont accept reservations.
In terms of Hotels....W is overrated...very trendy and located in all the hot spots...but super small rooms.

the Trump hotel is very very nice. Mandarin Oriental is the most expensive supposedly and the nicest, but it's super expensive.
gotta go to "Joe's Shanghai" to eat. great food. "Nobu" (japanese food) my family said was overrated...i mean the food's good and all, but sushi is "per 1 piece", not per pair like regular sashimi, so it can get quite expensive nice to try i guess though. have fun!

I agree, Nobu food is delicious, but they are way over priced. I went with a friend to Nobu and each had to pay around 120, and the part that pissed me off is after paying 120 I still was not full from the food. LOL maybe i just have a big appetite!!!
