996/997 Twin Turbo, GT2 and GT3 Applications
Design Inspiration:
Evolution MotorSports High Energy Discharge (HED) ignition coils were developed out of necessity and proven affective on our 1200 HP 996TT engines to provide increased spark energy and improve overall engine performance. Our development process began more than 2 years ago when we had reached the limits with the output of the stock coils. Since we continuously push the flat-6 engines to the extreme, we developed an ignition coil that improved performance and could withstand the punishment that we inflicted on them. Although we developed our HED ignition coils for the Motorsport environment where extreme heat, vibration and high RPM's are common place, our ignition also make a significant performance improvement to any power level Porsche.

EVOMSit ECU Calibration, Hitachi MAF w/ EVOMS V-Flow Air Intake, Sport Exhaust - No Catalysts, 91 octane fuel
The increase in power shown in the above dyno graph is due to the installation of the EVOMS HED ignition Coils only. Better, more complete combustion and cleaner burning spark attribute to the increased power and torque
Conclusion:
When Evolution MotorSports pushes the Porsche engine well beyond its engineering limits, we are usually the first to not only find these limits, but we find and develop a solution to them. The development of these coil packs was no different. Our process began with figuring out the limitations of the stock coil and determining a proper way to solve the problem. Like all of our product development endeavors, designing the best solution is top priority no matter the expense involved. No other company devotes the time to properly design, engineer and test performance components like we do. The products we design in our various performance systems are properly matched for the rest of the components which yields peak performance today, tomorrow and for years to come.

I have not tested them on that application but all of the coils are the same from 2002-2009 normally aspirated and turbo.

The test car was a virgin 12K mile 996TT. The car was serviced about a year ago (~1000 miles ago) with new plugs, coils, software, exhaust, intake and Hitachi MAF. We tested the car, installed oir new HED coils only and tested the car again. No other upgrades were performed. No misfires were stored and the car was 100% running perfect prior to the tests.

Regarding the dyno for the high HP application, the graph will not show the differences from adding the coils. There are too many differences between the dyno's to accurately represent it graphically. What I can tell you is with our high HP (900 +) applications, we are able to run more boost, more ignition timing while using a variety of different heat range plugs depending on the application. We also see much more consistent AFR levels with the coil upgrade which is due to better overall and more complete combustion. Additionally, on our monster 1200 HP applications, we are able to use a cold NGK racing plug that we were previously unable to run with the stock coils. Read on for more details:
Prior to the Texas Mile last month, we tested Joetwint's Monster with the stock coils and the coldest plug that knew we could run based on prior testing. When we are tuning the ecu, especially at this power level, we adjust the boost / ignition timing / AFR based on EGT. We made a consistent 1030-1040 AWHP with safe EGT and AFR levels. We then installed our HED coils and the colder NGK racing plugs. We conducted more than 100 full power pulls (4th and 5th gear tests) tuning the boost / ignition timing / AFR based on EGT levels. We were able to increase the timing and boost levels due to combination of our HED coils and NGK plugs while maintaining the same EGT’s. Keep in mind that we could not run this same heat range NGK plug with the stock coils. With the HED coils and NGK plug setup and same EGT's we were able to produce a consistent 1070-1080 AWHP. Additionally, we did not need to change the plugs after our 100 + dyno pulls prior to sending the car to the Texas Mile.
In summary:
At the 1000-1200 HP level, there is so much involved in producing safe power and our coil upgrade is not the cure all. It can be a useful upgrade that offers excellent results if the tuning is optimized to take advantage of the correct combination of plug, coil and safe EGT's based on the engine efficiency.
At the 800-1000 HP level, we have tested numerous different plugs and different octane level fuels with our HED coils. We have a plug setup for various different applications that require no fine tuning. Fine tuning can help to yield better results but as a "plug and play" application, the better combustion process translates to more consistent power.
At the 500-700 HP level, we have tested these cars with OEM and different aftermarket plugs with our HED coils. The HED coils can be installed with the stock plugs and will help produce a more complete combustion which translates to more consistent power as outlined in the dyno graph.
Hope this information helps

Here is a photo of us data logging and tuning Joetwint's Monster engine prior to Texas. The computer on the left is recording 6 different EGT probes and 2 different AFR readings from an onboard data acquisition system we installed. The computer in the middle is running the car through an emulator which is connected to the ECU. We are able to make live changes to the ECU mapping from this PC. The computer on the right is connected to the OBD port and is logging engine data from the car.

Now THAT is a computer setup I can appreciate! yes, the information helps a great deal. I am surprised that there's that much to be had over the stock coils on cars that aren't heavily modded but it certainly makes sense on cars that are. The price stings but if these are proving to make power and someone is going to have to go in there and swap coils anyway it sounds like it's worth considering.
