im trying to get feedback from you guys that have used or are using Short shifter. Im thinking about getting one but mine really doesnt bother me that much.perhaps because i have yet to feel the difference?

B&M Short Shifter is the ****! Makes it feel like a real race car! Feels so right you'd expect it to be factory! Great mod for the $.

 

I also heard that the B&M ssk has been to blame for many transmission failures. Any words on that?

 

Unless you're a schmuck and don't know how to shift, you won't have any problems. My friend is a mechanic for a porsche dealer and has installed over 100 of these and no problems.

 

Porsche sells and installs these same exact kits and is also a factory option. The only difference between Porsche and B&M is that Porsche has the name "Porsche" stamped on the shifter stock.

 

I have not heard anyone who own a SSK having transmission problem. The only thing that I heard was how great it is and fabulous result. Our group Pcars has many members with SSK including myself and we do have them for more than a year. I am an installer for our group and doing one for a Cayman S this coming weekend. It's the best bang mod. you can upgrade.

The aftermarket unit is the same as Porsche unit except the highway robbery price.

Every reference I have seen praises the B&M SSK. I have had it in my car for 9 months now and it is great. It does make the shifting a little notchy but is completely tolerable.

I will add that the Porsche factory SSK is indeed manufactured by B&M, however it comes from Porsche pre-assembled into the shift housing and is a direct swap, and doesn't require destroying the OEM shifter to install like the aftermarket B&M kit.

Better than eBay! I just ordered one.

 

On EBAY you find SSK in the $60-$120 ranges. NOT B&M.

 

For me this is one of those....why the hell didn't porsche 996s just come this way...rant

The B&M shifter is the one mod that IMO every 996 should have. It makes the car a lot more fun to drive and shifting is improved 100%....stock shifter is sloppy at best....no more missed 2 gear shifts.

There is a right way and wrong way to install. Maybe the tranny problems can be blamed on incorrect installations?

 

I also have the B&M short shifter kit, it is much more crisp and really locks into the gears compared to having no SSK.
