No, an intervention is warranted. Trying to protect his feelings would be like ignoring an alcoholic when he asks for a drink.

yes, but he must first admit to himself that he has a problem....hey, i'm sure he throws a mean tail gating party. You could fit a 10 course meal with drinks on that puppy.
