Phase Reversal

in this diagram, it shows that the rear speaker is phase reversed. is this just for the one speaker that is marked, or both of the rear speakers? what purpose does this serve. i was under the impression that running speakers out of phase was a bad thing. is that just old school thinking?

All looks ok to me both are the same coming from amp. I know it's best to keep both speakers wired the same (+ and -), but you can reverse the phase to your liking for SQ. Hope I did not confuse you more.

i know this is a tough question, but what are the benefits to the sound? is it harmful to the speaker in any way?

thanks,

I never noticed much difference when swapped. The MB Quart speakers I use in their manual states to set the phase to your liking as long as both speakers are the same so I assume they do not harm the speakers in anyway.

i have heard a lot about these mb quart speakers. they seem to be a very popular replacement in p-cars. i might try to hook up w/ someone at one of the local pca meets and give them a listen.

thanks,
Not at all. It just inverts the signal so instead of vibrating "in, out, in, out" it would vibrate "out, in, out, in".

If you had 2 identical speakers sitting next to each other and wired up one backwards, theoretically you wouldn't hear a thing because the 2 sound waves coming out of the speakers would cancel each other out (that's how noise canceling headphones work). Depending on speaker placement and how long it takes soundwaves from each speaker to reach the listener soundwaves from different speakers may be out of phase.

So if the soundwaves arrive out of phase, and you generate them at the same degree of out of phase, they should arrive at the listening spot in-phase.

Lots of complex math and/or trial and error. Basically it all boils down to what sounds best.
