The MOST system uses fiber optic cables for the speakers, amp, etc. As a result, none of the audio wiring is compatible with aftermarket head units, etc.

I tried to accomplish what everyone is talking about on this thread - bought an alpine head unit and ipod controller, only to find that another $2,500 worth of labor/wiring would be necessary to get my system to work (and that the bose amp that was part of the original MOST system would also need to be replaced).

I optioned to use an FM modulator - works well, and only ran about $40.

 

I am looking at putting these into my pre-most system and my wife's cayenne.

I am selling my alpine CDA-9847 headunit and ipod KCA-420i module combo with the porsche wire harness if anyone is interested. It worked great on my 00' cab with DSP system.

Those are all pretty cool solutions, but for that kind of money you can get a nice aftermarket HU with iPod control, HD radio, XM radio, etc, for less that sounds way better than the factory unit. Right now is the best time to get 2007 HUs at close to half price, since all the new models are coming out. I got a top of the line Kenwood Excelon for $225 ($450 retail) that kills most units in SQ that I'll be installing soon. I know that 03s and above have other issues with MOST, but with 02s and older it should be a pretty easy swap.

 

I just ended up doing a sound system upgrade which included an Apline 9886 headunit with the iPOD connection which is superfast.

 

You can get a decent ipod (or phone) mount here. I've got one in my truck and it works fine. The mount is for the side of the console on the 911. You can then add any device holder you need.

I agree, if you have a non-MOST system picking up a double-DIN aftermarket H/U is the (IMO) better approach. I have a Kenwood DNX7100 and it sounds great- plus I can watch DVD's and have full NAV, b/t phone and ipod integration.
Install wiring is relatively easy- making the trim piece takes a steady hand and some time.

One of the weak points of the stock stereo is low gain output to the factory amplifier. The aftermarket H/U's usually have higher output on the RCA's or speaker leads, which drives the factory amp harder, giving better sounding output.

I'm still figuring out what to do for my MOST Cayenne- I hate the thought of paying five bills for a black box to hook up an Ipod, but short of replacing H/U - amp / speakers I don't think there are any reasonable alternatives.

 

cant you buy the unit that plugs into your cigarette lighter and transmitts through a radio station (I think 88.1). That unit is somewhere around $25-40 on Ebay. Your iPod simply gets set into that unit. Then you play it. I have Serius radio that plays thorough my car stero by tuning into 88.1 on the stero. BAM! Once tuned into that station, I then go to the Serius tuner to change stations. I have friend who uses his iPod the same way. I think he paid $40.

 

Forgot to mention... it's plug in, and play. No running to a stereo shop to get them to hook something up etc... Simply order it on Ebay & when it arrives go plug it in, and your listening to your iPod. How easy can that be? You dont even have to go to a store.

 

Forgot to mention, I have an Alpine (nice one) in another vehical. Bought it because it integrated with an iPod (with a cable). I've hooked my iPod up 2 times and thought it SUCKED (trying to locate songs on the Alpine). Who thought up the way to access the songs on your Alpine head unit??? Not easy... or at maybe I didnt take 1/2 hr, of time to learn it... I also didnt want to read the owners manuel to the Alpine stereo to figure out how Apline now wants me to locate the songs... which is totally different than the iPods way of locating. Once I semi-learned how to pick music on the Alpine... I thought it was WAY too much work. Give me the $40 FM transmitter, thanks.

You get what you pay for with FM modulators- if you don't care about crummy sound then go for it. My advice listen to one first before wasting cash.

some of the aftermarket H/U ipod interfaces we're obviously designed by engineers who never use an ipod.. lol

Go play with a couple of them at the local stereo shop- the double-din Kenwoods and Pioneers have decent interfaces, plus you get video capability.
