If it contains a cotton cone filter, which I think it does. Then all you have to do is rinse it with some mild soapy water. The important thing is to let it air dry. Do not use a hair dryer or heat gun. You may shrink the cotton and worsen the filtration properties of the cotton filter. The next step is optional because some people think oiling the filter can cause MAF failure. Oiling the filter will definitely trap more dirt before it gets into your engine. You can protect the cone filter even more by purchasing a K&N dry charger which is a slip you put over the cone filter to keep out more dust and water. Fitting this on may reduce the air flow slightly. If you do decide to oil it, just do so lightly and soak up any extra oil by rolling it in newspaper. Hope this helped!

Recommended cleaning every 10-12k miles, K & N has a cleaner for these types of filters. Spray in on - hose it off from inside to outside. Filter must dry completely before reoiling. A very light mist of K & N oil is all that is needed. Let the oil set up before firing up the car. 1 -2 hrs min and do not spray too much oil on it or you will have issues
Or just buy replacement new filters.

My question is how do you get the damn thing out? I had a tough time of it the last time I serviced my car.

Well I just replaced mine this past weekend with new and it does come off. However you have to man handle the darn thing. First remove the sealing gasket, then I loosened everything, the bolt that holds it in to the engine bay, the retaining clamp on the filter and the other side of the box as well as loosened the clamps on the rubber boot at the intake (lower only). You have to just work the filter off the flange and yank it out. I thought it would be mangled - but surprise it came out perfectly round.
Now to clean it and reoil it.....I will use the K&N cleaning kit per EVO's instruction....critical parts to cleaning/reoiling according to EVO..
after spraying on the K&N cleaner let set for 10min...spray from inside filter to outside only
after it completely (COMPLETELY)dries...lightly spray(I MEAN LIGHTLY) K&N oil on each side..let it set up for 12hrs min then reinstall or store in sealed plastic bag - Ziplock.
Overspray the oil and the MAF will be affected....

How much is a new filter? Is it really worth all the effort or is it just better to replace with a new one?

there's a filter version that doesn't require oiling. oiling sucks.

i obviously just got the oil free version new and called it a day. was $80. worth the trouble to me.

I find that after you oil it, stuff the inside with paper towels and take an air compressor to it. I set mine at 100 psi and blow away. Any excess oil is blown thru the filter and is caught by the paper towels.

I usually repeat this process two to three times or until the papertowels are clean. Since I have been using this method - I have never had an issue with my MAF. But then again, I also clean my MAF everytime I clean the filter.

buy a new one, clean the old one... when the time comes swap between the 2 with no down time. It is supposed to be a lifetime filter.

Loosen things up...pull hard on the filter...It will take time and a little work but eventually the filter will come out. Clean and re-oil using the recharge kit. Reinstall. Takes ~ an hour.

Folks the replacement filters are 80.00 and they are oiled also, I just ordered one and received it. There is no none oiled version. You do not want to run a dry filter after cleaning...
