Unhappy Got hit in a parking lot...

A guy backed out of his parking spot into me yesterday while I was on my way to breakfast. Its not major, just a rash on the wheelwell behind the right rear.

He tried to drive away hoping nothing would come of it, but I stopped him. He apologized, gave me his name, address, and phone number, and said he's take care of it.

So here's the question, I think he scratched the rim a bit too. Its not totally noticable without looking but its there alright. I know that will be the expensive thing to fix. Do I fix that too or just the body and call it a day?

I know I shouldn't feel guilty about sending him a bill for $1k, but I'm sure he's expecting - like I did - it will only be $200 worth of paint work.

Opinions?
TIA

What a nice guy....I would have gotten a police report, all his insurance info, and read him the riot act and maybe had him arrested for attempted hit and run...but that's just me. in my opinion, he should get the car fixed to the state it was before the accident. Now getting a new wheel will not be $800, epecially if you go to a plece like wheel enhancements in So Cal, have them ship you a new wheel...or look into getting if fixed...they sand it and repaint....maybe $200, add anotehr $100 or so for a rental car while your carrera only has 3 wheels...

Aron:

Well he was a loser for trying to leave the scene so I would get the rim replaced. People like that are a real blight on society.

Have a good Monday

I probably give people too much credit for being decent. You guys are right, his first instinct was to try to slink away instead of stopping to double-check, like a decent person would have.

It was a funky deal. I backed up to line up a spot and as I rolled to a stop and put it in 1st, he backed out into me. We both kinda stopped at the same time. I kinda heard a clunk, but wasn't sure. I looked in my mirror and it looked like we were touching. He pulled forward, so I whipped in my spot hopped out and checked the fender. While I was doing that, he was backing out with the intent to leave like nothing happened. My wife laughs at me cuz she thought I was going to throw down. I ran up, knocked on his window and said "Get out. We gotta talk. You just backed into me." It seemed to go well from there. He didn't deny it. He looked at it and confirmed he did it. We agreed it would need paint, it was too big and deep to try to touch up, buff out, or other.

More I think about it, the more I realize he's the kinda dude that would back into someone and just leave if no one was there to catch him.

While at a gas station in my old Boxster, I was watching a group of obviously drunk houligans...they got into an older american car, oldsmobile or buick something like that. The driver floored it in reverse, spun around and backed into a parked car...then he punched it and took off...I was in a rush but the more I think about it the more I wish I would have jumped in the car, followed, gotten plate numbers and called the police on my cell....In LA, that's how innocent people get hurt sometimes, but I feel sorry for the poor guy who comes back to his car with major damage...what if someone did a hit and run, there were witnesses, but no one said anything....

Two months ago my bumper was scraped by an 80 yr old lady at an intersection... it's enough to make you sick. I took her insurance info and told her insurance company the shop I planned to use, rather than their reccomendation of a Ford dealer, etc. The insurance company was very understandable and fulfilled my request as to which shop to use and to do a complete re-paint of the entire bumper, with clear coat, etc.

I would definately require insurance to pay for your rim damage.

No worries Aron, you car will be back in shape in no time!

Aron,

A few months back I came out of the gym and found this very large white truck parded so close to my car that I had to drop the top and hop over the door to get into my car! Needless to say I was a little pissed that this arsehole parked so damn close to me. I drove away thinking he was a rude bastard. When I got home I realized that he hit the side of my car! He was so close that I didn't see the damage while in the parking lot! I was so pissed I broke every law and red light to get back to the gym to find the bastard (very stupid in hindsight). But by the time I returned to the gym parking lot the gym was gone!

I called the police explained the situtation and went home feeling quite empty. I waited in the parking lot for that truck for the next 2 weeks but he never returned! I had the door fixed on my own dime for about $700. Goes to show you that people are very careless and do not take responsibility for their errors.

Regardless if the guy tried to bolt or not he should pay for "all" damages he caused to your car. Hell, most people in LA would probably take him to court for emotional stress. He didn't just hit your car, he hit your pride and joy!

Good luck with this.

Thanks for the moral support guys. Here I'm worried about over reacting cuz the wife is teasing me, saying I was all like "It's GO TIME old man!".

Here's the evidence. Tomorrow, I go for estimates.

Good luck collecting from this guy.
I hope the estimate doesn't blow his mind and cause him to change his tune.

My wife had a very similar accident in her benz... The guy was sweet as can be... Then when we call the insurance company they tell us he claims that they were both moving and it is equally their fault... No witnesses and we only received 50% of the repairs from his company... BULLSH_T... She was not moving and just sitting in her car... Was not worth getting mine involved due to the deductable.

The wheel looks to be the equivalent of curb rash. $75 in our area to fix. Guy takes the wheel off, partial dismounts it in his truck, repairs it and paints it (onsite matching). Saw a new Volvo with repairs and it looked brand new. http://www.mobilewheelrepair.com/
Just an option. You could still get a new rim and do this as a spare.

edit: Of course I've late night surfed to a 4 month old post.

I was at the gym one day and when I came out my front end had been hit... a hole in the bumper!!! along with damage to the drivers side front fender.... well to my surprise the lady who did it was looking for me... even went into the gym to find me... had a note ready explaining she was sorry and was going to take care of it... bottom line... she was decent... EXTREMELY decent... her insurance payed for everything... new bumper... new radiator... cause she hit it that hard!!! basically I had the whole front of the car be repainted by a Porsche Pro who charged big bucks... her insurance company didn't mind and I also was given a 330 xi loander for 3 weeks...

you can say I got lucky... cause she could have left..... bottom line is ALWAYS get the other person's information and make them write on paper that it was their fault and their insurance will cover it... this way there is no denying who was at fault.

hit and runs burn my ***... make them PAY!
