I'm in the market for a 996 and am curious what you guys think is going to happen to the value of these cars in the coming months. The winter season is only months away and the economy isn't exactly favorable. Not to mention that unfortunately 996s aren't the most sought after cars with the 993 on one end and the 997 on the other.

Don't get me wrong, I like these cars. Excellent bang for the buck. A real heating system, tons of potential for performance and appearance (a little vanilla stock).

Soooooo all this being said, 99-01's are selling for under 30 and 02-04's are only slightly above this pricing. Where are they going to be in December?

Keep in mind, I've been watching some of these vehicles on the market for MONTHS... So unfortunate.

 

I picked up my 02 C4 cab. 3 weeks ago and found that pricing still holding steady in the 40-50K range for 01-04s. My father sold his 01 C4 cab. with options & hartop for 55K in late 04/early 05. (9K miles) Judging by what the average price is and what I paid for my 02 it looks like the market is fairly steady and will stay that way for while.

 

The market for these is going straight up baby... collector status is imminent and they will skyrocket right up there.

it's depreciating just like any other mass produced automobile.

 

These cars will continue to depreciate. However (today), you will not find prices for nice cars in the range you quote above. Sure you may find some rough examples in that range, but buyer beware.

 

agreed with ray. sure you can pick up a 996 for those prices, but you're going to get a pos one compared to say my car that's absolutely mint inside and out.

the 996s/997s will depreciate the same way. i don't buy this 996 is the red headed step child so somehow the depreciation curve is markedly worse than the 997.

the 993 is a unique beast because they made far fewer of them than they did the newer water cooled versions. sure it's aircooled, but it's also dated but not in a bad way since it is a 911.

 

I think over time (long-term) they will hold value. Once people scrap them, wreck enough of them, etc.

The thing that will be nice is they will be affordable and tons of parts will be around for them. Can only be good for aftermarket development.

 

If they keep dropping I'll buy another one to make me feel better.

The car market as whole is very soft (both new and used). All economic indicators point to a recession and everyone is wary of oil prices. Some dealerships have put out signs saying "No SUV trade in here".

Great time to buy some cool cars if you have the coin and the space to keep them.

Where it goes for our 996's, best optimistic guess is to continue downward but with some stabilization of the price. They will continue to depreciate but good well cared for examples will still fetch a decent price.

One thing to look at is that early boxsters have already dipped below 10K on the bottom end.
