First time oil change question

Any idea what the 2nd part of this list is for my oil change? These were the price quotes at my local dealer. I have never heard of a crush ring.

FILTER 37.16, CRUSH RING 2.28 PLUS TAX

It is the seal for the drain plug itself (looks like a washer, metal seal ring)

is it your first time changing oil ever? good way to start getting to know the car.

pretty much every car uses a crush washer. you can get these at autoparts in bulk (3-4 at a time too).

while you have the car jacked up, look for oil leaks, any chaffing around the engine bay. some dirty coating around engine is normal since the engine has a coat of oily stuff when new to prevent rusts.

i recommend using ramps. they are cheap and very safe, easy to use as well. Just drive up the rear onto the ramp. make sure tires are centered on the ramp.

Be really careful you don't over tighten the drain plug when installing it and make sure you use the new washer. In fact i would recommend using a new drain plug ($5.00) because they are aluminum and the head strips easily. It may save you future grief.
The price on the oil fliter looks expensive you can get an aftermarket one mfg. by Mann (Porsche OEM) for $15 from Pelican parts or Automotion ...

Well, I am not changing the oil myself. I am having done at my local dealer but bringing in my own oil. They are gonna supply the other 2 parts mentioned above. I imagine I should be okay with the price since I am gonna supply the 9 quarts of Mobile 1.

Why are you bringing in your own oil if they're supplying it?

Labor and yearly inspection was $166.00. I got smart and brought in my own filter as well and got the crush ring at no charge. Total charge for everything including mu own oil and filter was a whopping $242.00.
Kind of a shocker when I just had the oil changed in my Chevy Trailblazer the day before and it cost me $30 with 7 quarts of oil included.

They really get you at the dealerships. I'm looking to do my own oil change. Any good DIYs?

It's really no different than an oil change on any other car. Drain, replace filter, fill. Just be sure to get the crush ring, and a new o-ring with the filter. Renntech has a good DIY procedure on there though, which includes part numbers.

I had a heck of a time finding a filter wrench in my area. Ended up using a small rubber belt wrench.

Bringing your own oil........

Do you take your own eggs to Waffle House?

It is really a simple do it yourself job if you are looking to save some money.

Very much straight forward to do the oil change. Actually, it quites easy than most...

Get 5 quarts jug at Wal Mart or Costco. Oil filter is around $13 with seal. Make sure you have large enough bucket for dirty oil. 8-9 quarts.

That filter must be gold plate for that price.

I thought So. Cal is where all the stealers concentrated.
