Would you own a 996 outside of warranty?

A friend of mine has been looking at Porsches and sending me links to classified ads and eBay listings of 996 C2's, even Cabrios. The prices are surely low enough to buy. But I am trying to tell him that actually purchasing the car it self is ONE thing. The other thing is actually keeping it on the road. I think he might think he can have one of these cars because of the price tag.

The ones he showed be were between $24-26,000.00 with between 50-82,000 miles. NONE of them with a warranty... personally I would rather buy a car I could own out of warranty without being intimidated but I am warning him that this one is not the car to buy without one. It was even placed on the motor trend best cars new or used for $25,000 cars list with the m3, Supra, NSX, E55 AMG, C5 zO6 anddd I can't remember the rest. So what do you guys think about the risk of owning one of these when you are footing the bill for repairs and maintenance. I heard the RMS issue on these things isss a DOOZY and even if it was corrected it still inevitably comes back.

In Motor Trend the "fear factor" section never listed the RMS issue, but it listed that any repairs or maintenance big or small would be at least $1,000.00

Yes, though my pref would be with CPO.

I don't have a warranty. I bought mine with about 29k miles last year. I had the opportunity to buy an extended warranty (I sell them) and opted not to. Should you find one w/ a CPO, that is certainly a better way to go. Bottom line -- if you are concerned about repair costs, then the car just isn't for you. This goes for any car - if the cost to maintain it is out of your budget, then so is the car.

This is a bulls**t question. For $30k you get a fantastic car. With a small amount of due diligence you can rule out RMS as a potential problem. If you're concerned about repair costs consider a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. If you want to enjoy yourself and attract women, take the risk!

in my experience, no. that aside, the usual assumption about attracting women always makes me want to laugh and roll my eyes at the same time.

I think that this is a valid question just w/o any real substance......
does this mean every girl you date must have a money back guarantee that she pays you when the date goes bad....or that for every time you marry a prenuptial is required....get real.....the real world is these cars are like every other kind of highline car. There are lemons and there or cars that never have any issues.
I have a 99 with 31k miles that does not have any of the motor worries......get the car inspected by a knowledgeable porsche mechanic. Or buy newer - but don't be swayed by a car w/o a warranty

RMS by itself is like a $1000 repair.

Most of us will be pretty soon anyway. . .

While I know repairs are expensive, I contrast that with the huge amount I saved by buying a used, low mileage car, and try not to worry as much.

keep reading the horror stories about oil coolant mixtures, rms, gearbox/synchro issues, etc. i'm laughing at the people who are like "well if you can't afford to fix it you shouldn't buy it". it makes no sense, even if you are loaded to buy a car with a history of problems without a warranty. And if dropping $10-12K for repairs is included in the argument of whether or not you can afford the car, then that argument is pure stupidity. all cars depreciate. why throw money away? get the freaking warranty. Are you trying to save $2,500 bucks by not getting one. Makes no sense.

totally dude. it's those people saying that who really don't have ****.

spending 25-40% of the value of the car on an engine replacement and being insouciant about it is absolutely STUPID. why not just apply that extra dough towards getting a newer 911 anyways?

stupid stupid stupid

To each their own in the evaluation of what is worth spending $$ towards warranties including the extensions of same
I know these cars have issues and that does suck. BUT I do not and will not believe these cars have a high risk of a catastrophic failure, no even close.
I drive with piece of mind without a warranty. If a big failure (not cooling tank, RMS and the like) would strike me I do have the ability to take care of it and still enjoy the luxuries life has brought me.
It's very simple, not worth spending 3K or so for a few years just in the remote chance with all the odds in the favor of the warranty companies.

Wasting money fueled by paranoia is what makes no sense.
If it was real I'd have sold my 996 long ago and bought real piece of mind via another make of car such as an M3.
People die in car wrecks every day but most p-car owners go on pleasure drives with no second thoughts.
This whole thing has been blown out of proportion and beat to death again and again.
