996 Headlight covers/doors

Looked at an 02 996 today that has been sitting outside for a while. The headlight covers/doors were badly stained and cloudy. Are these replaceable, or do I need an entire lamp (which I'm sure is stupid expensive). Maybe there are some takeoffs on ebay? I'm pretty sure that only the low beams were xenon, or perhaps they weren't xenon at all. Trying to get the option codes now. Little bit in the dark here (sorry, bad pun). Thanks for the help...

What is a headlight cover and door? Do you mean just the lense is foggy?

If so, you can buff it clean or wet sand it if its really bad

I think these are past that...

they are cloudy and chipped. And there's no one in our area skilled to buff these things. Maybe someone offers that service, or I could dismount them and send them out?

Yeah, there is a shop in New Orleans that only does headlights, but I haven't seen their work. Its almost like a drive thru deal.

You cannot replace just the lense. It is very difficult to remove the it and requires putting the very expensive light in the oven to heat the glue... Then even if you do get it apart without cracking it, porsche does not sell the clear lense.

Regarding replacements.. Non-xenon with orange turn signals can be found for cheap or free, all clear non-xenons are a few hundred, and xenons (litronics) can be a grand or more.

you can probably can polish them up yourself. To know if it's a Litronics light, see if it has a chrome round thing for the headlight washer... if it does, it's Litronics.

One body shop here in LA wet sands them with 1200-3200 grit sand paper and then use both rubbing and polishing compounds to remove the fine swirls back out. Their work looks pretty good. No mater what, make sure you either remove them first or mask the surrounding area before you get started.

The ebay takeoffs normally run from $1200-1,500 per pair.
