Ouch. Prep on these aftermarket body part is killing me !

Just found out today that prep for my turbo look bumper and spoiler together is going to be around 20-30 hours. Ouch. This sucks. It's going to cost almost as much as the parts themselves. I got the bumper and spoiler from Anziano's. The turbo look spoiler is the same one as Mashaw's and NR's and are sourced from the same shop. The bumper is in house anziano.

Worst part is, I don't think there is a better alterative out there. They told me they spend an average of 15-20 hours prepping on techart noses and wings. I have seen a techart nose and spoiler out of the box and it's pretty rough. One of the guys in the shop told me that he spent 15 hours prepping on a $10K factory porsche wing. Must have been one hell of a wing

I guess all this stuff is pretty crappy out of the mold. I hate to whine, but I had hoped I wasn't going to blow so much money on prep. My shop said it's the only way to really make this stuff look decent. You'd think with the kind of money they charge for these pieces on our cars, they would be ready for paint right from the retailer. I never could figure out why you can buy a whole body kit for a honda for the same price as a wing on a porsche. Guess it's the cost of owning a porsche.

Not sure what cost numbers you are talking about, but many of the aftermarket molded products require substantial prep. We've seen just about all of it - Gemballa, TechArt, others. Never seen one ready-to-paint before.

But if you want to take some digital shots and email them to me, I can give you an idea of our pricing to compare.

30 hours sounds pretty inflated. If the parts are that bad, send them back. Should not be that high.

Just buy the real Porsche turbo front bumper. You can find those for $600 used on ebay all the time.

Ouch!!! Sounds a bit high...Boy I really liked the idea of changing rear bumpers. Maybe it would be better to buy a porsche rear bumper and pay for the mods than to buy that one and to pay the prep. Maybe it would be a prep. I mean c'mon, what do they have ? one guy working a whole week on the thing.

He is talking about a rear bumper not the front one(which he already has).

That does seem a bit high. I have an aftermarket wing on my car, of which I was worried when I took it into the body shop, prepared to hear the same story. Luck would have it, I got a really high quality knock off and a little prepping was needed. (Next to none basically...got charged for one hour) The company I purchased from isn't a board sponsor...so I don't know if it's okay to say. But they were awesome to deal with and the product...well...speaks for itself. 30 hours seems really high, if it's in that bad of shape, I would consider a second opinion or to send it back for a replacement.

that does seem high. i recently had a front bumper, rear decklid and wing and hood done. the prep time was less than 20 hours.

i already have the turbo factory front. fit was great on that. it did require a few hours prep because it was used and had some stone divots, etc.

it's the rear bumper and the spoiler that i went aftermarket (anzianos.com). i wanted to do the factory rear, but what you don't spend in prep, you'll end up spending to modify it to fit the narrow body and even then it isn't perfect. guess you can't win with this stuff. seems like you'll going to spend extra money to do the rear bumper no matter which route you go.

i'm sure the orignal oem parts are way better. i changed some stuff out on my bmw with factory parts and the prep was minimal.

i agree that the numbers seem kind of high, but these guys are pretty good and have a perfectionist attitude. i guess it's going to work out to 10-15 hours prep per piece. they know what i'm expecting it to look like and are being pretty honest about the time it will take to do that.

i'm going to stick with this shop. i had to have some warranty paint work, so i thought it would be more prudent to have it done all at the same time. not to mention i like these guys. i just have to decide whether or not to keep the parts. there just aren't many good alternatives out there. even premium techart and gemballa require tons of prep. they are going to see how they fit up today. if they fit okay, i'll probably give it the green light and suck up the prep cost. if they don't, i eat shipping both ways and it all goes back. they really should sell this stuff primed and ready to paint for this kind of money.

robyn: who made your spoiler? could you throw up a pic? no forum vioaltions there if you prefer to keep it on the DL, send me a PM.

Here are some after painted pictures. Prior to taking the wing in, the body shop was very weary and warned me that they would most likely need to do a LOT of prep work since the part was after market. However, after putting it on the car, and ensuring fitment and the quality of the part, even they were surprised at how quality it was. I'm sorry I don't have any pictures of it prior to being painted. I purchased the wing from Departstop.com (Dayton is who I dealt with...super nice guy). If you would like to see the hi-res of these to get a closer look, PM me. I'm not sure if this is helpful...let me know if there is something else you are looking for.

i'm gonna get stuck with shipping. don't get me wrong, the overall shape and appearance of the parts is good. it should look great with the proper prep. thing that makes me angry is that we pay so much for these parts and they're not even prepped properly from the people that mold them.

after weighing shipping at 150 to me, 150 to return it, and another 150 to get another bumper to put on the car (my original one was slightly damaged and could not be repaired), i decided to just have them prep and pay the money. i wouldn't sleep well knowing i blew almost $500 in shipping wish i lived in CA so I could swing through and just pick this stuff up.

thanks for the pics robyn. wing looks sweet. very nice fit.

i'll post some pics up when it's done and give the final tally for hours of prep.
