Hey, this is actually my first post. I have an 01 Jetta wolfsburg with the 1.8t. I looove the car. The earlier models have had their quirks, but everything was recalled. Since they have changed their warranty on the new models, they are very reliable. Also pretty much every engine offered is bulletproof. If you can wait, the new Jetta comming out, after the new golf debuts this Nov/Dec., is supposed to be vastly improved. Safety wise, the Jetta is one of the highest ranked cars in crash tests. In the end, they are both great cars, but teenage girls tend to favor the Jetta's in my experience.

If you want a long lasting car with no maitenance headeck go for the Civic, if you want a better looking car and better quality on materials go for the Jetta. I am not saying that the Jetta will not give you some problems, it will but the latest models are coming way better. They use to have lots of poblems with the power windows and transmision. Power windows can be overwritten to work. And yes I use to own Jettas in Mexico the whole time my brother is the Bettle cabrio director so i do have some experience with VW.

The Honda for sure, and trust me I am partial to German cars myself but I do have 2004 Accord in my garage too.
They are absolutely the hassle free decision. If you don't want your daughter to be coming to you saying the car needs this or that go with Honda, you'll never hear a peep out of her or the car.
The sensible thing to do for sure if you have to buy your 16 y/o a new car make it a Honda.

I think an 02 996Turbo is a perfect starter car, but hey I'm not normal .
Seriously tho, I have heard bad things about Vdubs lately, so I think the Honda might be the better choice....just make sure...NO HUGE WINGS OR LOUD EXHAUST....RICE

Personally, I much prefer the German car. I've owned an '88 Jetta and '99 Passat and loved the Passat. The Jetta was a fun driver, but it was OLD!!!
Sorry to say this too, but I'd say you're 16 year old is spoiled if you're getting her a new car, especially a $20K+ one! What's wrong with used?!?!?!?!? As others have said, you can be pretty sure she's going to ding it up too... That's what teenage drivers do!

Eric,
In one word, Honda. Hassle free for your daughter especially while she's away at college later on. I've owned two VWs, Golf and Jetta. Major problems after warranty's over. If you do, then a 100k warranty is a must on VWs. The depreciation on VWs can't be ignored. Honda resale value is excellent even after your daughter earn her Porsche.
The German snobs in all of us will say VW. Yes it "feels" more solid because all the controls are stiffer. The Honda feels less solid because the controls are lighter. But Japanese robots and their quality control are way above German car standards. No loose screws and nuts and rattle anywhere in a Honda.
She'll thank you for the Honda even five, six years from now.
