Where & what to buy a clutch?

My clutch seems like it is getting close to being replaced. I have about 75k miles on my 99 C2 996 original clutch. Can you guys give me an idea from just an average clutch to a really good clutch and what the differences are? Also where to buy one?

I would go for OEM. It did last you 75K miles.

BTW; Let us know what the install cost and who is doing it _THNX

Just got mine done. I bought all the parts from Sunset. Best price going. Labor was for 6 hours at $134 per hour. All said, it came to about $2100. Went with OEM, although I considered lightweight flywheel and Spec Clutch Stage 2+. I don't track so that seemed a little more than what I needed. I like a quieter clutch too, without the chatter and did not want to risk it.

I bough the AASCO LWFW (used here...it was damaged durung shipping and AASCO made it new for a couple dollars...great company!) and plan on buying the SPEC stage 2+ clutch from Ultrarev.com. I was quoted $500 for labor at a local independant. I may do it myself.

just go with the OEM one.. . just some information, the OEM 996 clutch that you buy from suncoast is now updated and from the 997. the disc material is better and it works fine with my supercharged setup

i can't rember the exact parts but contact suncoast and they will let you know what you need for the entire clutch package (i think there was 3-4 parts)

Does anyone know if the flywheel needs to be replaced too? I am about to change the clutch and talked to a shop which the owner said I need to replace the flywheel as well. Any truth to that?

The dual mass flywheel has springs and other goodies that will need checking. I'm not sure if the face can be resurfaced, but I'm sure you dealer or indy can check it and let you know.

It could go either way. If the flywheel in not too bad, it might not need to be replaced. Mine was, so I replaced it.

I have seen OEM Luk clutch disc/pressure plate kits on *Bay for good prices, just search 996 clutch. Seem pretty reputable. Best prices I've seen.

I have also seen Sachs clutches on ebay for around 400. I dont see why people are spending 2000 with labor.

Is it any different to buy a $400 off ebay and go to an independent shop for an install?

I purchased a Sachs clutch kit from ebay for my 2002 Carrera.

It fit perfectly and it worked fine. It was the cheapest solution.

Porsche does not make clutches, they only put their name on them.

how often is it necessary to change a flywheel? Because I need a new clutch soon and am not sure if I should buy a flywheel as well

I just did my clutch by a local shop in Santa Clara. (The Renn Shop) Marvin did a great job for a GREAT price. I ended up having the RMS changed and some other work done while he was in there.

Also, my flywheel at 49k miles ended up having some play in it, so I had it replaced with a new OEM one. Total cost was quite a bit, but most of that was the clutch kit and the new flywheel, Marvin's labor cost was very fair. My flywheel had some lateral and some radial play, which made a pretty gnarly rattle. (sounded almost as if I had a ltw flywheel!)
