IPOD integration into Porsche? Anyone has suggestions?

What year is your 996 is the big question. If you are 03 or newer it gets interesting. Earlier than that it's easy, just get the aux in cable for the radio unit.
If it's an 03, your choices from highest to lowest cost are...
1)Replace the entire system with an aftermarket one including amp/cd changer and headunit. You can keep the speakers but at that point why bother.
2)Add a seperate amp for the iPod and have either a manual or automatic switch to share the speakers.
3)get an iTrip or similar FM modulator and use the FM radio to tune in the stations(works pretty good in the porsche since the FM antenna is in the windscreen.
4) Attach your headphones to your shirt with paper clips and turn the volume up really high and listen real hard....
I have an 03 with PCM2 and use an iTrip and have a seperate in-car charger since the iTrip is small and it doesn't always merrit charging my iPod for small trips of 5 hours or less.
Good luck and let us know what you think...

mine is 01, where is this Aux plug on the radio located?
for those people with alpine head units,
Alpine just came out with an ipod interface around $90.00 that you can use your alpine head unit to control the ipod. pretty slick.

For everyone viewing this thread... That would be part of option #1 as listed above... You would still need an alpine head unit which on an 03 or newer would also require a new amp and cdchanger.

Question #1: Where do I keep it?
I keep it in the passenger seat or in the center console. Since I used it like a remote control to change the songs, it makes no sense to mount it anywhere as it would be too hard to use the click wheel anyother way.
Question #2: You need to contact becker USA. You will need the aux input kit and radio removal keys.

Can I jump in on this? I was just about to ask a similar question.
This option would be my first choice. Do you have or know any details about how I would go about doing this?
TIA. Jamie

FYI: I think someone on funcarsonline just had something like this done on his porsche, though to use a XM radio, but same principles apply. He didn't have details of what was done to make the XM work with his PCM2, but it's the only thing that makes sense based upon how it seems to work and that he doesn't have to worry about switching FM channels when the frequency of broadcasters in the area he is in gets too strong.

I've tried every FM modulator for the ipod known to man. They all suck with a capitol "S".
As far as changing the head unit out to support to the ipod, if you've got Bose....forgedddaboutit
I went ahead and got the becker attachment for my stock radio. However, I also have the cd changer. You have to pick the ipod or the changer. You can't run both at the same time as the radio will only accept one aux in.
There is the icelink option. I think they do the bmw one. They have one for the 996, but I don't see the value as it's just as simple to drill a small hole in your change pocket up front and wire in the aux input.
There is a lengthy thread on rennlist or renntech about this type of install. One even shows you how to wire in the power.
What I would like to see is a power cable and a male rca cable coming off the dock connector. That would be sweet. You could wire it into your 12v source, connect to the aux in on the radio...you're in business.

I've got my Mini Ipod hooked up to my 99 Boxster using the Aux-In kit, and have it mounted using a ProClip.. It looks slick, sounds great, is easy to use, and wasn't too expensive. I do wish there was a solution where I could use my CD changer, but other than that, I'm very happy with this setup.

you can change your head unit regardless of if you have BOSE or not, and with the new head unit, it will sound even better. I have done this in a few 911's and my previous Cayenne. You just gotta "beat the system"

I took a simplier approach
I have found that the battery on my iPod lasts 8-10 hours of almost continuous use, so I did not feel that having a dedicated power source was necessary. I have a 2002 C2 so I have used the Aux-in connection to my Traffic Pro to input the iPod signal. I simply ran the mini-phone plug out the back of the radio, and then tucked it under the side of the console down to the ashtray. The Ashtray makes an excellent iPod holder with the addition of some foam weather stripping tape. The entire setup is very easy to use, and removing the iPod is a snap. The audio cable is long enough that I can pull out the iPod to look at it to change music if need be. There is a non-smoker kit to replace the ashtray, but it is too wide and lets the iPod flop around. The stock ashtray is just wide enough for the iPod and the cushioning tape.

Renntech:
feel free to share. I've asked a dozen installers who all say you can't change the head unit out on the bose without seriously f'n it up. i'd love to know how to do it and still at least maintain the same quality.
