What other engines will work for my 99 C2?

whatever you do other than a 3.4 its gonna be big $$$ for the conversion... a 3.8 would be ideal for your car...
#4
i like the idea! how hard is the swap?

its involved.... you'll need the following in addition to a healthy 3.8:
3.8 rear harness ($$$)
2002 + 3.6 ECU
2002 +e-gas pedal
2002+ 3.6 instrument cluster
2002 + fuel sending unit
check out www.fvd.com they do the conversion for like $25 USD... its not cheap... but your car is gonna fly when its done... you should be as fast as a MKII GT3... (strait line only)

I spoke with renegade last year and i was under the impression that an LS1 would not fit as the engine bay is smaller in the 996 compared to the earlier, air cooled cars.
I was wondering whether a tuned Subaru H6 might work in N/A form or a Subaru WRX Turbo flat-4. I looked quite hard into the conversion and I reckon I could get the engine in fine, the problem may be the 'box/ starter but that may be solved at some point...
As it is, if my engine ever pops (and lets hope it doesn't) then i woudl likely go to Autofarm in the UK (who look after my car anyway) and get the (supposedly) bullet proof 3.7 conversion. I don't think any other solution would work out cheaper. Either that or get a machine shop over here to machine my case for Nickies liners and rebuild the engine myself, for a larger capacity with the IMS and cylinder upgrades.
Hello by the way - This is my first post, despite being a lurker for over a year!

Upgrading to a 3.6 is not that big a deal. Roock in Atlanta does them, it cost about $2,000 or so more than a straight 3.4 swap. But the price of a 3.6 remanufactured from Porsche is about $8,400 vs $11,050 for a 3.4, there is a different core charge that cost a few hundred dollars. So the price difference for the engine pretty much covers the additional cost for the 3.4 to3.6 swap.

Have a look here chaps:
3.7 from a 3.4 or 3.9 from a 3.6:
http://www.autofarm.co.uk/engines/water_cooled/capacity
They have the IMS upgraded and thicker walled cylinders, so they are a significant step up from a Porsche re-man or new engine, in theory at least. They have built a Cayman RS with the 3.7 engine which has been very well received on this side of the pond. I had a look a few weeks back when I was up there, almost (a very real) 100bhp/litre from an M96 and a gorgeous throaty roar.
Still, I reckon, if you could solve the starter motor issue, the Scooby WRX engine might be cheaper as a replacement.

Again, talk to Fabian Roock. When I talked to him he said the upgrade from a 3.4 to a 3.8 was not that much more difficult than the 3.4 to 3.6. And a 3.8 reman is less expensive than a 3.4. the 3.6 X51 is also less than a 3.4. Porsche knows it has the 3.4 owners over a barrel, its disgusting!!
