Is the play radially or axially?

If it's axial (end) play, then your thrust shims have failed. If the play is not too severe, you might not need a new crank (or bearing carrier). If you are a DIY person you could probably do this for $5-8k range. If you pay someone else to do the work you are better off (financially) finding a used engine.

If it's radial play, you are better off (financially) finding a used engine. You'll need a new crank and probably bearing carrier, which used parts will put you in the $4-5k range. On top of that you are looking at $6-8k DIY or double that for someone else to do the work.

Also not mentioned, buy and use ARP rod bolts.

If you re-use the crank and rods have them measured properly and magnafluxed before re-using them.

big end failre

the play is radial

as do DIY , i think i am as good or better than many professional , like mentionned previously , i have rebuild many , many porche -6 , so i intent to do it all by myself, at least i know , no corners are gonna be cut , i can even get the local dealer to correclty do an alignment on my audi,,,,,

i have done a quick calculation to rebuild
1000 for the crank
1000 bearing /chain
1000 head r&R
1000 gasket and miscealenous

will be like new

rebuild

as for parts

i have been dealing in the early ( pre 73 ) porsche for a long time and i have made many connections throught out the years , so i am not buy from a unscrupulous junker , that wait in the shadow to take you in the back

my price were , 1000 for the cranks , 2500$ for a short block , and 6000 for a used engine( but thats pricey and like playing roulette)

the engine still runs , the play is micrometric , so its very early in the failure , so if i am lucky , just crank, worste case , short block ( change the bearing and imf and i am still looking at a good car for cheap

How much radial play are you talking about?

There are no oversize bearings (there have been talks about making some), so if you have steel on steel or more damage you might be looking at a bearing carrier and better add a few more $1k's to your budget.

With that kind of budget you won't fit new OEM rings and clips ($1000 on their own). Good luck getting good ring seal reusing pistons with or without new rings if your Lokasil cylinders are oval or worn (old or new pistons).

Better than "average" cam timing will also be a challenge without a real timing tool. Yes you can fabricate cam lock tool, but getting the timing spot on it not easy without the real tool. Not saying it can't be done.

With a $1k budget for genuine Porsche parts you are going to be cutting a lot of corners and re-using many parts that should be swapped out.

just to add a note. i stopped by my local Porsche, Audi, VW dealer to pick up my daughter's VW after a repair. I was chatting with the Porsche service chief and he casually mentioned that he had 3 cars in awaiting replacement engines; a 996, an early 997 and a boxster.
interesting........

My rebuild and upgrades (much better than the $6K used engine) will end up costing me less than $4K. Of course, I'm doing the work, so you have to add labor cost to that price for someone else to do the work. (of course, you got to find someone. Ha!)
Very nice! Thanks for the info
