Upgrading the stereo (2004 with Hi-Fi)

I don't even know what the hi-fi stereo consists of, as it seems like there are two speakers in the dash, two in the rear panels, and then two woofers in the doors. It sounds pretty horrible, but I think it just needs new speakers.

As I understand it, the mounting holes for these speakers are not standard. So, my question is, what size speakers do I need and what sort of adapter plates?

Thanks,

- Anthony

Call Rod Birch at Car Audio Innovations. www.caraudioinnovations.com

He is the 911 stereo guru.

Also, you could do a search here, as this is a fairly frequent topic.

The biggest problem you face with an 04 is the Most (fiber optic) bus. Few systems and speakers are compatible with this bus. The weakest link in the system is the speakers, they are crap, so that is where you should start. Even the best head unit and amp will still sound lousy through the stock speakers.

Yup, which is why I want to replace the speakers, as it should make a big upgrade.

I will follow up on the link posted above. Thanks.

No one here knows the speaker sizes though?

I have this info at home and I'll try to dig it up later. But I'm sure it has been posted here a number of times. Try a search for "Focal" and you should strike gold.

Try this link to see my system (register to see the pics):

[edit]
Rod has a special setup with speakers that he calls the the 165V3 hybrid.
This comes with a set of 5.25" midwoofers for the doors;
4" coax for the rear; and
a 2-way setup with a 4" and tweeter for the dash.
Add on a custom box with 3X 6.5" JL audio woofers with an amp, and you are golden.
[end edit]

Heres what I did on my 2000 996. I put Focal 100KP's in the dash. These are component speakers, 4.25" mids and tweeters. I used the ring from the frames from the original speakers to secure the mids, and silicone to secure the tweeters. It takes some dremeling. These have crossovers, which are located in the trunk. You have to do new wiring as you need two pairs of leads, one for mids and one for tweeters at each location, and the stock wiring only has one pair at each location. For the doors I used Focal 5WS, which are(were) 5.25" subwoofers. These are nolonger available, but Focal has a 13KS that is the same size and both are designed for small enclosures. It took a small amount of dremeling to remove some of the rib material in the enclosures, and then you can screw the speakers in place. You need to seal them for the enclosure to work right. There are some who have put 6.5" in the door, but it takes more mods to do this. I used the OEM wiring for the doors, but mine is not a Most system, so you may need to do more wiring. Finally, I put Focal 100 slimlines in the rear, these are coaxial, so the stock wiring worked.

The result of all this was a great improvement in sound, but it was underpowered. Then I added a JL Audio E6450, 6 channel amp, 2 channels for the front, 2 for the rear, and a blended 2 channels for the doors/subwoofers. The result is great sound, although the small subwoofers don't give as much base as 10" would, but that is not what I wanted. Even with the stock head unit and the 6 disc changer the system sounds really good.
