Redline recommended to me that I run 5W-40.

 

M1 15-40 with a can of Swepco Oil Improver and or 1/2 can of EOS for these SoCal temps

 

right. I'd run the 5w-40 if I was heavy traffic on a regular basis. I do frequent trips over the hills, so the 10w-40 was rec to me. I think were ok either way. I've actually seen
a lower engine temp, about 1-2 degrees, since I've used the Redline. I don't track this car, but the 10w40 was rec for cross-over street/track use.

 

In addition to my previous request for info RE: ROYAL PURPLE...

I think I read something to the effect that you should only use Royal Purple if your car is no longer under warranty. Should this be a warning sign to someone like me who is thinking about switching motor oils on my next oil change? I will be driving down from New York to Miami in Oct/Nov and I would like to get my oil changed before my roadtrip. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I use what is in my manual...

for a turbo it allows:
0w-40, 5w-40, and 5w-50 (Mobil 1). For most if not all other brands, it only allows 5w-40. I have found the Mobil 1 5w-40 "Turbo Diesel Truck" to be an excellent oil for a turbo....it has a lot of zddp....and is cheap. At least for the turbo, the 10w is too think to let oil cover the VANOS feature up top...so it may hurt these engines...covered in Panorama a year or so ago. I use the 5w-50 if I can find it...5w-40 to save money...and 0w-40 if the dealer installs it. Honda uses 0w-20 for what it is worth..that is water.

Porsche uses 0w-40 in race cars....

Does anyone have any info (good or bad) regarding using ROYAL PURPLE in the Porsche? Its supposed to be the best money can buy, right? Or should I just stick to my local Porsche dealer who changes my oil with MOBIL 1?

 

I used Motul when I did it last. Dealer just did it so I'm sure its Mobil 1. I will probably switch to Motul again. I personally think the service intervals are a little long. I usually try to do them between 3000 to 5000 miles on all my stuff.

 

I just had a full fluid service yesterday at my local indi who specializes in Porsche and also races them on a pro circuit.

He is very ademate about proper care and when asked what is the best oil? He told me there are many opinions on this, and the top brands will perform much the same. The most important thing is to have a proper sevice done according to what Porsche states in the manual. He likes to have tem in a little sooner than later.

Personally, I only drive my car about 4k per year but change the fluids at the end of every season regardless of milage.

This indi uses 5W-40 Kendal GT1, the same oil he puts into his race cars and said it has proven to do a very good job, he gave a little chuckle when I said "but the sticker under the lid say's Mobil-1" He is German and apparently very good at his craft.

 

Castrol Syntec. With a liter of Lucas Oil Additive.

 

Amsoil 15w50 racing oil is some AWESOME stuff from my experiences, however I don't race this porsche like I do with my supra, so I'll be running Redline 5w40 or 10w40(havn't decided yet)

 

Man guys some very good points from many listers. I have always used 0W-40, but am leaning towards 5W-40 to be safe. I use it as a daily driver for mainly March-October in Michigan. Any thoughts? Does anyone recommend 5W50 in Michigan? Thanks!

 

I use Mobil 1 5W50.. up here in Canada... from March to November... don't drive the car in the winter.... do lots of tracking.... have oil tested @ blackstone labs after 5-6 track days (10 hours) and they say oil has lost 3-4 points of TBN but still good... I throw it out after 10 hours of track time combined with 5-6000 km of road use... blackstone tells me I can go longer on it but I want full strength protection for track days...

 

I checked the L&N engineering site when investigating the IMS bearing. They suggest using Motul or Castrol Synthetic in order to preserve the RMS and IMS. I am switching to either one on my next fill from Mobil 1.

 

I wonder if it really makes that much of a difference. I run 10w40/15w50 mobil 1 mix on the boxster and 10w40/20w50 Royal purple mix on the 911. It "seems" like the 911 runs better with more miles on it but maybe it's just in my head.
