Help - Thoughts on this 1999 Carrera 4 sale

Would like to purchase... but been looking at 997's. What should I look for for an early 996?

Thanks in advance...

palestar is infamous around these parts
From everything I've read the main issues on the 996 are:

- RMS Leaks
- IMS
- 2nd-gear Popout (Although I think its more of a Turbo issue)

Any car you're serious at should have a full PPI which would find any of the problems listed above....

Here's something that you might want to to check out.

At about 45K on my 2000 C4 6sp, I found that both side seal on the front diff were seeping. Diff oil was seeping out, getting slung by the axle drive flanges, and creating a 'pattern' on the underside of the fuel tank, etc. You couldn't see this unless the front under tray was removed. The driver's side was a little worse for some reason.

The front diff doesn't hold much oil, so the first thing I did was drain and refill it so that I wouldn't have any problems while researching and getting the new selas, etc. I drove it this way for about 3~4 months.

I decided to drop the whole front diff assembly to make replacing the seals easier; there's not much room to work otherwise. I was already installing PSS9's, new front wheel bearings, and both outer tie rod ends. Note that these flanges are only held in place by a simple C-shaped snap rings, one per side, that Porsche says should always be replaced if the flange is removed.

Ive had my '99 C4 996 for a year; brought it with 75k miles, now has 82k miles and no problems; routine maintenance. The car has good power and is fun too drive. Find a good mechanic, get it checked out and enjoy.

Thanks everyone. I like the car but I am now hoping to find a 996 with the aero package.

PPI is costing $260 at dealer. They said they would look it over but can't really ID any RMS issues - if it's sealed and looks good, that's ok. Does that sound accurate?

What are the major repairs and expenses I might ask them to look for?

Clutch replacement will cost how much??
DME , other expensive repairs ??? Dollar amounts??

Thanks in advance.
