Aluminum Door Sills Came Off!

Has this happened to anyone else?

I was washing the car and noticed a weird colored water running out from the factory aluminum sills. Turns out it was the tape degrading. Who knew they were taped on?

Anyway, they lifted right off with no effort. They were essentially being held on with gravity at that point.

Now I am left with tape goo on the back of the sills and tape goo on the jams.

How the heck do I clean this up? I know if I leave glue residue and re-tape it I'll just be dealing with this again sooner than later. It is a very sticky mess and it's not wiping up very easily.

Try using goo-off or Brake Clean, do not spray on body, spray onto a towel and rub off

I'd use goo-gone. Brake cleaners are a bit harsh for using on painted areas.

Deputy, you want to find and order 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner 08984. It's made to remove adhesive from painted surfaces and it is absolute magic. I promise it will get rid of the goo easily and quickly.

It is also good for removing the old weight adhesive from your wheels.

From the days at a body shop, I remember another little tool which is a little bit easier to use. It goes on the end of a drill, it's a little circular wheel which will remove adhesive without hurting the paint. It's almost a rubber or nylon material, and the spinning action peels off the adhesive, without hurting the paint.

I did a quick google search and found this site: Removal Stuff. Use with caution, we're not affiliated with this site.

Thanks. I already googled it and ordered it from Amazon this morning The damn shipping was almost as much as the stuff.

So you've found this stuff is safe on paint, no problems? I've got all sorts of track mung I'm trying to get off my car right now too... Melted tire, grease, etc... that isn't washing off.

This stuff will take it right off without hurting the paint?

The dealer tried acetone. It wasn't cutting it for some reason. It did dry out the leftover tape though which helped to peel it. The glue remains though

I see the 3m adhesive remover on there. Which of the products is closest to what you used to use?

It works great. I'd gone through lot's of products trying to get things off my cars. This is the best I found. I was amazed at how well it get's stuff off the car. No problem to the paint, but the wax will be stripped also.

So you're out $7. It will arrive in a day or two and you won't have to go to a Wal-Mart. That's worth way more than the shipping right there.
