smoked vs. clear side marker

is there a difference? i have bought two 996's that came with what i thought were smoked side marker lights:

i was told they were factory pieces. but i dont see any smoked ones for sale.

i see a lenses labelled as "clear" from suncoast and bumperplugs.

are those the same thing?

The 996 comes stock w/yellow side markers. The ones pictured above are after market. I've not found anyone who sells 'clear' side markers as seen on the 997. Some advertise as 'clear' but they are the smoked version. Bumperplugs are the smoked side markers.

ya they do. I spoke with someone at Bumperplugs and he acknowledged that they are labeled as clear but really are smoked. Easy install....5 minutes.

Hella makes some. I've seen CPO'd cars with them mounted.

The factory clear lights have a light/medium grey tint. You will notice that they match the clear headlights and clear taillights perfectly (depending on how your car is equipped). The factory lights are made by Hella, I'm not sure if it's the same exact part, but I'm sure it's pretty close. So if you spend the extra $2.00 for the factory set you get a 2 year warranty (if that's important).

My brother ordered a pair of the hella's from suncoast for his 986 and they had a light grey tint like Ric said, so i would consider them "smoked."

Just bought some "clear" Hellas, they're slightly grey tinted from Pelican
(Parts # 996-631-043-01-M44, 996-631-044-01-M44)

Or if you want truly clear, ebay has some LED versions $51.99 Here

Smoked is the way to go....clear will not match as Suncoast mentioned. Mine were hella's and came with the orange bulb. It only takes 1 minute to swap them out per side very easy. I also just added a smoked 3rd brake light to my C4S which looks great as well.

New to me this week '04 996tt Cab looking for smoke turn signals but with LED anybody make that setup? I assume if I bought the Hella smoke and swapped the incandescent orange bulb to amber LED it'd have to be CANbus compliant to avoid fault?
