My Audio upgrades so far.....
Got the double DIN conversion kit and a Kenwood DDX714 with buttons that can be programmed to match the dash lighting.
And here is my custom built subwoofer enclosure housing a couple of Earthquake SWS 6.5" slim-line subs. The grilles came from another brand of speakers and installed to protect the subs from the kicking feet of my kids. These are powered by an Earthquake amp in the front compartment. The main speakers are powered by a McIntosh 4-channel amp. I am very pleased with the sound.
I will be changing the speakers to Morels in the near future. Currently have Boston Acoustics.

Since i'm not a diy-type of person due to my extremely busy schedule, I had to have this made by my local audio shop, therefore, sorry I do not have any sort of diy procedure for this. This is actually the first time the shop did this sort of thing on a Porsche so they did everything on the fly....measure here, measure there, trim here, trim there, trial fitting, a little more trim here.....you get the point. It did cost me around $500 for this custom job (not including the speakers) which is still definitely worth it. I suggest to check out your local audio shop if they can do something like this on your car and get a price quote. If it is something that is worth the cost to you, go for it.

I wish. The sub system may have satisfied the low end but the whole system is now lacking in the midrange to the highs even with the use of the headunit's tuning tools. Maybe due to the speakers' match (or rather, "mismatch") to the acoustical properties of the 996 cab's interior. In BMWs, I had to use something that uses silk tweeters for a more laid back sound. The Boston Acoustics I have in the car now can be fatiguing in my BMW roadster, based on actual experience. In contrary to BMWs, the 996 cab seems to need something with that is more forward sounding rather than laid-back. I would figure Focals and Morels would work best in the 996 cab. Focals can be fatiguing in BMW interiors but would probably shine in 996 interiors. Don't know but this is just my observation and everyone is free to chip in on their personal opinions on the speakers that is most suitable to the 996, based on actual experience. I will only be able to tell if my observation is correct if I change the current speakers to Morels of which I plan to do sometime in January.

I have found that you can use the factory crossover -3dB attenuation setting with Focals to soften the sound when needed - yes they can be a little much at times without it..... another option is DynAudio if you think the Focals are too bright. Focals and DynAudio are the only two brands I consider in my vehicles.
How do you like your Kenwood unit? I am about to take the plunge on installing a nav system in mine.
