Interesting sightings on the Porsche factory tour ...
I took the tour this morning and it was a great two hours.
The engine shop had 997 boxes in two distinct places. One was even labeled "997 - Jahringen 2005 - 3.6/3.8 liter" ... hmmmm ... wonder what they were building on the engine line with those? The assembly line also had 997 component labels in the area where the drivetrains and engines are joined. Nothing on todays line looked to be a 997 mule, so they must build those when no outside eyes are looking. There were two Carrera GT engines being built in the engine line.
It was interesting to see the product mix running down the line. PAG builds 150 cars a day (75 a shift times two shifts) in Zuffenhausen. 85% of today's mix was 911's (they have a computer tote board of build and projection for the shift that you can see on the monitors at each station) and about 25% of those were 911 Turbo Cabriolets being built. The line we toured had 11 Turbo Cabs on it out of about 45 cars total. The parking areas for finished cars had a similar percentage. Two people at the German delivery center were picking up Turbo Cabs. Forget the Cayenne, the Turbo Cab is saving Porsche this month.
