Insufficient octane level does not cause a clatter but a knock. A knock will be eliminated as a result of the knock sensors signal to the computer.

Most likely, you got a bad tank of gas or the clatter is a coincidence and has nothing to do with the gas fillup.

When does the clatter happen?

Might be the knock sound.

When i shift a bit early, so im under RPM in a taller gear.... I know, I know.... run the gears out. But I just noticed this after this fill up.

Most of the time Im running 20 - 40 MPH on the way to work ..... no HWY, bunch of school zones.

I need to run the car on the HWY more. Run the RPM's up, BLOW it out.

Sometimes I feel like a old granny driving around.

Im going to go NUTS at the Texas Mile.

I know exactly how you feel. My commute is 8 miles through feeder streets to neighborhoods. I just got my car 3 weeks ago and sometimes I feel like I may as well be driving a Ford Contour.

i never use shell in my more expensive cars or big power builds. i've nevre been happy with it's mpg it's given me, and it always seems to cause more knock/pinging than other premium fuels.

at least that's my experience in this part of the country (cincinnati area)

Maybe it's some of those "environment friendly" additives like MTBE. Not a big fan of additives. Shell won't say, not will any other company...it's a trade secret.
