Unhappy Someone keyed my car...

at work. I usually park next to a Mercedes SL500 convertible. Next thing I know (hours later), I notice a scratch on the passengers side door. It's really disappointing how people can really do something like this. Maybe it makes them feel better to ruin someone else's life just because they're jealous or theirs isn't going right. I've worked with these people for years and everyone there knows me as as a great co-employee and friend. It's really hard to talk about it... anyone have any suggestions on how I can remove the scratch? It didn't really go that deep into the paint. I'll post some pics as soon as I can.

Here's my car:

Will post the pics of the scratch when I get home to take pics...

If it is a clearcoat scratch, you might be able to try a good detailer who can polish is down.

What color is the car?

I checked earlier this morning and I believe it isn't THAT deep of a scratch. So I believe it's a clearcoat scratch. The black paint is still visible....

The car is black (pic above). Just edited my post...

Sorry to hear about this. Nothing frustrates me more.

If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail then the best you're going to be able to do is reduce the visibility of the scratch.

There's two approaches. sanding an buffing or even buffing alone can knock down the edges and make it much less visible. Again if you can feel it with your fingernail it's not going to completely disappear.

Or you could lay down some touch up in the scratch, slowly build it up to a level above the paint around it, wetsand and buff and you'll also get a very good result...but again not completely gone.

If neither of those are satisfactory you'll require a paint shop not a detailer.

If you can field the scratch with your nails then need to be sprayd.

Yes, I can feel the scratch with my fingernail.

I just can't bear to look at it, much more touch it. If I can't buff it out, I'll just have it sprayed (possibly to another color) for some-odd thousands. I'm at work right now and I really can't focus on my job thinking about it. I just can't have her with that scar....

Thanks so much for your advice Andy.

A good carnuba wax will help 'hide' the scratch. Try some different buffing compounds, then wax it.

Also, take a look at Dr. Colorchip. I've tried it with mixed results on stone chips.

scratches happen - are you sure it was intentional? when my 10 day old X5 was keyed I felt your pain but I cant say it ruined my life... thats a bit much.

FYI. 700 bucks later and the scratch is history.

It was indeed intentional. It was keyed, and that can't be done by accident. It didn't ruin my life, it's just the pain you feel when you can't trust people you've worked with for over 11 years. And plus the money and time that you invest into fixing it back up again when it shouldn't have happened in the first place. That's what gets me.

$700 bucks later... where did you go/what did you do to remove it?

Not only that. The fear of your car will be keyed again. The fear that your car is already a target.

We live in a decent Neighborhood. Every car we have own has been vandalized.

2004 Tahoe - mustard put in all the handles. It being a white truck, and the fact we didn't use it for a weekend the mustard stained the paint.

2009 Toyota FJ - Keyed

1995 Toyota Previa - broken into twice, and dented with something the size of a basketball

1987 Cabriolet - Keyed

We are waiting in fear that our 2003 allroad will be next.

People just have no respect.

700 bucks was the cost to repaint the door. I have to say that I would just drive it scratched if it was light but my scratch was to the metal
