Mobil 1 hard to find

Time for an oil change on my new for me 2000 C2 cab. The dealer receipts show 5w/50wt Mobil1 with an oil additive identified by the dealership as a "Swepco" product. I could not find 5w/50wt Mobil1 at my Wal Mart, or at two different auto parts store. I have seen the oil on the Porsche approved list, so I know it exists. Upon calling the dealer, he said use 0w/40wt, but this oil did not exist as I understand it when the car was built. Considering the problems with the RMS (mine is leaking slightly) and the IMS bearing wear (film strength?) is 0w/40wt a correct choice? Also, has anyone heard of this Swepco product (dealer says avail there) and how much I should add to the 9 qts of Mobil1? Is there a comparable product available at auto parts outlets? I read on this Forum of the Mobil1 5w/40wt Turbo Diesel Oil which also meets gas engine requirements - is this a good choice due to the extra level of additives in the diesel-rated oil? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

0-40 is the correct weigh oil. do not use oil additive. the manual says so. i also do not recommend diesel rated oil in a porsche.

I have always gotten a kick out of the discussion on oils, Mobil 1 and the proper weight. There are Mobil 1 stickers on the car, they were shipped with Mobil 1 and this is what the dealers use (or used). However, I believe that the formulation for Mobil 1 has changed since the time our cars were manufactured (I also have a 2000).

However, what amuses me the most are the statements that 0 W-40 is the "correct" weight of oil to use. This is what I was told, this is what the dealer used when I bought the car in 2000, and this is what most people say.

HOWEVER, IT IS NOT WHAT THE MANUAL THAT CAME WITH OUR CARS SAYS! I have attached a copy of page 140 from the manual so that everyone can see it. Nowhere does it list 0 W-40!!! For synthetics there is 10 W40, 15 W40. 15 W50, 10 W-40, 10 W-30 and 5 W-30. But no 0 W-40. Funny thing about that!

Now there are other Porsche publications that I think may say 0 W-40, but not the manual that came with the cars. So for someone to make adamant statements that 0 W-40 is the correct weight seems out of place.

I personally use Castrol Synthetic in 5 W-40 in cold weather (oh no its not on the list in the manual!) but for the hot summer weather I am going to change to 5 W-50. All I would say it that there is no way I would run 0 W-40 in hot weather.

My manual is on page 148??

It does say in ambient temp 50F or above 10w-40, 15w-40, 15w-50.

The only 10w-40 in Mobil 1 I've recently found is a Truck formula- anyone use this???

I ended up adding 0W-40 cause I didnt think it would be smart to use the "truck" formula..?

I recently changed the oil and filter in my 99 C2, and for the last three years I've been going with Mobil 1 10w40 High Mileage, I buy it at Wallyworld for $23 a gallon. I live in a hot climate, north Texas, and my car has almost 70k miles.

I use Swepco 15/40 year round in California. 99 996 C2. RMS upgrade at 55,000 miles. 62,000 on the car now. All good.

You can also order any Mobil Oil from your Mobil/ or affiliated dealer. It's probably a little more expensive than some of the discount places, but they can get any Mobil 1 oil you need. Oder by the case or gallon and it is cheaper than by the can.

Mobil1 hard to find

Well, I have an update. I have found Mobil1 15w/50 at a WalMart in 5 qt container size. In the 2000 C2 manual it states that 15w/50 is one of the recommended oils as Dharn55 has shown with a copy of the page from said manual. My question is: Has Porsche released a service bulletin, or some update that now rescinds that previous recommendation? It seems that the film strength would be superior to a 0w/40, while maybe not quite as good from a miles per gallon standpoint. I will trade a bit of mileage any day for the piece of mind resulting from better protection. Since the IMS bearing is a little iffy, how can it hurt? Any opinions out there? Thanks to all who have chimed in. I checked Bob's Oil Forum, but it appears they deal mostly with diesel discussions. Thanks again.
