Problems starting - A/C and Door Locks; HELP!

Hi All,

OK, so I purchased the 2001 C2 with 35k miles. Pre-purchase inspection all checked out with no problems. I drove the car for about a week with no issues.

Today, for some reason the A/C did not blow air at all. I checked the fuses, and they are fine. I left the car alone for a couple of hours and went back to it, now, the car blows air when the ignition switch is on but without the engine running. It just blows air, not cold air. Once I run the engine, air does not blow.

Also, I had a hard time getting the key out. I finally got it out, but I cannot lock the car. The lock button on the dash does not work, neither does the keykob.

Lastly, now when I put the car into first gear and release the clutch, I hear a grinding noise in the engine. Once I start driving and go through the various gears, the noise is gone.

All this happened today. Any advice on what is going on? I am tempted to just sell the car and write this whole purchase down as a huge mistake.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am not a DIY kind of guy, and just wanted to drive the car around for some fun.

If you having a hard time getting the key in or out it maybe your ignition switch going bad...very common for early model 996..Cheap part to replace & easy DIY..

I would agree with above. Bad ignition switch can cause some very goofy things.
Grinding noises are another inssue. Does the noise totally go away once things are warmed up?

I've got your answer....

When you turn the key all the way to the right, it is actually sticking in the start position and not settling back to the "Started" position. Jiggle the key when it is on and see what happens. All mine needed was a drop of wd40 and it never happened again.

If it still happens, check this thread for the full repair..

Hi Nola - You were 100% right. A little WD-40 and also when I turn the key all the way to the right, it just needed a click back to normal position and A/C worked fine! Keyfob still doesn't work though. I assume ignition switch still needs to be replaced because it is a little stiff. Any thoughts on the keyfob? When I press a button the light in the dash flashes red, but nothing happens.

Function 12 - the grinding noise actually only happens on initial start up and I no longer hear it once the engine is warmed up. Any thoughts?

Thanks Again, you guys are the best!

Does your car have memory seats? If so, dirt in the switches can cause the fob not to work. It can also cause some other weird behavior. It takes very little to make it not work. Sometimes simply blowing into them fixes it, and sometimes it takes a vacuum to clean them out.

Thanks for all your input guys. I ended up taking the car into the stealership because the ignition switch was giving me a hard time and it was dificult getting the key in and out. Decided to replace the ignition switch and they reprogrammed the keys and checked out all other issues. Total cost around 750.

Grinding noise is gone, stealership said they saw no issue, which is weird. I guess the noise could have been coonected ot the ignition switch?

Anyway, all is good (for now), and I am back to focusing on mods - need to upgrade the dull interior and add a navi/bluetooth screen....
