Angry odometer trouble

I have lost the display of my odometer and trip odometer. Anyone know where to start troubleshooting? My car is a beautiful 1999 996 C2 with about 62k miles.

Take the console off and check the connectors and bulb are seated correctly,
My odometer was coming on and off recently and was only a loose connection at the back.

Does anyone know of a 996 will run with the instrument cluster removed. Ft Lauderdale Speedometer says they can look at my odometer problem but if they want to keep the instrument cluster a few days, it is too far to walk back to West Palm Beach.
Also, is the mileage of the car being stored somewhere? My Durametric Tool doesn't tell the mileage either but then it doesn't say it can anywhere in the instructions.
