weekend interior project
#20
Heads up on the adhesive used to apply interior pieces. Just contacted 3M and they say not to use 3M 77 in cars but instead use 3M Super Trim Adhesive PN 08090 (heavy weight cloth or vinyl) or 3M General Trim Adhesive PN 08088 (light weight cloth).
Their message is as follows:
"Tony,
Thank you for contacting 3M Automotive Aftermarket Division.
3M(TM) Super 77(TM) Spray Adhesive is not suitable for automotive use as it
does not have sufficient temperature resistance for a car sitting in the
sun. The following products can be used for automotive upholstery and
headliner attachment.
3M Super Trim Adhesive PN 08090 (heavy weight cloth or vinyl) or
3M General Trim Adhesive PN 08088 (light weight cloth)
Super Trim Adhesive PN 08090 will have a tendency to soak through, and
stain light weight cloth, although it has superior heat resistance and is a
stronger adhesive than 08088. Super Trim Adhesive PN 08090 can also be
used to bond hood silencer pads to the bottom of the hood.
USE ONLY IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA WITH ADHESIVE, BONDING SURFACES AND AIR
TEMPERATURE ABOVE 60 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT.
CAUTIONS: Solvent may mar or attack some automotive paint and plastic
surfaces. Masking is recommended where over spray may occur.
DO NOT USE 08088 or 08090 on polystyrene foam.
You didn't mention what you were trying to attach, so below are the
instructions for headliner replacement:
Directions for use: (heavy weight cloth or vinyl)
1. All bonding surfaces must be clean and dry.
2. Shake can for 10 seconds before using.
3. Adhesive must be applied to both bonding surfaces.
4. Hold can 6 to 8 inches from surface and apply a minimum of three even
coats of adhesive. Allow solvent to dry between coats (the time will vary
with temperature). The third coat should be applied at a 90 angle to the
first two coats.
5. Allow a minimum of 5 minutes drying time before bonding. Bonds can be
made up to 1 hour after application.
6. Important: Apply very firm, uniform pressure to bonding surface.
Directions for use: (light weight cloth)
1. All bonding surfaces must be clean and dry.
2. Spray a thin, even coat of adhesive to both surfaces, holding the can
approximately 6 inches from the surface. Do only as large a section as you
can complete in 15 minutes or less. (Usually ¼ to ½ at a time)
3. Apply a second light coat to each surface at 90 to the first coat.
4. Allow adhesive to become tacky (usually about 3 minutes).
5. Lightly position the section of headliner that has been sprayed.
6. Firmly press surfaces together. This MUST be completed no more than 15
minutes after adhesive application.
7. Repeat steps 2-5 on each remaining section.
If you need further assistance, please contact us.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I have used both in the past. I just used the "trim adhesive" to put the headliner in my 912, but have always used the "77" on the smaller interior pieces. They must underestimate their products a bit since this is actually the second time I have done my cab. The first time I didnt like the color and thus switched to the darker grey over the weekend. The other color was on for about 2 weeks and had to rip off the other stuff....it was holding well. Oh well, good info for the future.
