Paint suggestions for matching alumilook trim?

Hey all,

Inspired by NineEleven's thread about painting the bumperette's (https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...umperette.html) I've decided to paint the lower center console myself. (well, that and the insane prices vendors charge for this )

Does anyone have an idea what color/where I could find paint to match the aluminum trim that's on the glove box handle, door handles, etc? It would be nice to match those but if not I'll go with arctic silver as that's my exterior color.

Any ideas are appreciated and I'll post pictures once I finish!

If you go to a decent paint shop (I use JB Paint), they can scan whatever you want and match the colour electronically. JB guarantees perfection, or they will give you another can until they get it right.

So I went to Home Depot and used this:
http://www.homedepot.com/Metallics/P...atalogId=10053

Rust-Oleum Bright Coat, Metallic Finish. It matches the Alumalook trim about as closely as you can get it! The can says not to clear coat but it looks much smoother and better with a clearcoat and the clearcoat adheres to the paint just fine. It does not NEED a clearcoat though.

$20 for enough paint, primer, clearcoat, and sandpaper to do most of the interior :-) Took me3-4 hours one evening and 1 hour the following morning to do all the work, very simple (just do very thin coats and be patient on letting it dry!

Should have posted a pic the fist time around. Anyways here's one. Not sure if I want to paint the whole lower console or not yet. The only reason it's not a perfect match is the lighting, I really think this is close as you could get.

My mistake it was Diamond Silver #8802029 (which might be an Audi color LE7Y Diamond Silver (M) Cc 8802029) (here is my source http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...int-code-lable)

Here is an example of what it looks like from a fix I made to the shifter trim.

The can says not to clear coat it but I did, it looks WAY better. Tips:

Get the primer PERFECT. 5 coats, 600>800>1500>2000 sandpaper. Why?

Because you want to paint with the thinnest coat possible if you want the metal fleck that makes it match so well. Literally 2 thin coats is enough.

Let it dry a FULL two days. Do VERY thin coast of clear after that, then you can lay it on for the last 2 coats or so. Wet sand, polish, and it really looks great. The pic I posted was with my phone, when I finish the polishing this week sometime I'll post a pic with a proper camera.
