perryinva is infamous around these parts
You would only do it if you want full oil filtration instead of the stock partial w/bypass, and want much finer filtration than the stock filter gives. You don't do it to save money in the short run. Since so many motor rebuilders and Porsche specialty shops recommend it, and it is easy to do and a cheap mod, plus you get a metal canned filter instead of the plastic cover, I don't see why if you plan on keeping the car long term, it's not worth it. For a lease or someone that gets a new car often, no point at all.

i see. spin on filters have bypass too though. bypass is there for protection and only operates under certain pressure i believe.

Correct, but the OE is always partial, with the spin on in bypass only if it gets clogged, which for a conscience oil change schedule is unlikely.
