Replaced head unit, now locking with fob gives fault
Hello list, n00b 996 owner here. 2001 with the stock CDR-220 which I replaced with a Sony DSX-S300BTX. New unit is working great, but now when I lock the car with the remote key fob, it blinks the lights twice and gives a short honk. I understand from reading other threads that this indicates the alarm system thinks something is wrong like a hood or trunk open. I have of course opened and shut those as well as the center console.
So I'm wondering if the act of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery to do the install is causing a hiccup of some sort.
Any advice appreciated.

There is a tab on the radio that gives you the error thinking that the original radio was stolen. That's why the warning beep on the alarm. You need to find the cables (on the side of the radio or where the radio used to be) and either short them or separate them to avoid the warning...

Can I assume it is something that touches the old head unit? All of the wires/connectors from the back of the old radio are connected to the new unit and I haven't removed it again yet to try and see what you are describing.
Think I will also call Crutchfield and quiz them about it, since there was nothing in their otherwise excellent installation instructions about this.

You are right with your assumption. Now just look at you old radio and you will see a little magnetic field (Thief alarm). which the new radio has not. Just tap this thing with somethin and you are ok.

I did some more googling and with that and the info posted here figured it out. I wanted to post the results in case others need this.
There is a brown/blue striped wire that attaches to a post on the left side of the radio bracket; this is a metal pad about 1/3" square that touches a spot on the radio unit. The wire is not connected physically to the radio.
I couldn't see it until I took out the metal "sleeve" that Sony supplies to lock their unit into the dash.
In the case of my 2001 model I simply had to unplug this wire from the post/pad and cover it with electrical tape. You could cover the pad itself with tape but I thought the metal sleeve might tear it off when re-inserted into the dash.
I also want to note that I had to remove my cupholder unit from the dash in the slot above the head unit in order to route the copious wires and give the head unit clearance to be fully inserted. The cupholder front cover snaps off and you remove the 4 screws and out it pops.
Over all it was straightforward to install the replacement head unit with the kit, wiring harnesses and instructions from Crutchfield. If I had gone to Best Buy and just picked up a unit without the extra stuff it would have been much more difficult to do the job. Not being paid by Crutchfield to say that.

Yes I will be selling the unit. I tried to send you a "private message" but I don't have enough "posts" yet to be allowed to do that. You can try sending me one with your email so we can do this off-list.
