suction cup roof racks
Anyone try these?
http://www.seasucker.com/ProductCart...&idproduct=194
look like a good option for a rack and easy on/off
Just not sure if you can make one also work for surfboards

many many moons ago I used to work for an East Coast Ski retailer (now defunct!) and we sold tons of rack systems. Yes, suction cups systems are inexpensive, and for a good reason...they are cheap. Think about the amount of "load" your prized surfboard(s) will undergo when crusin' down the road. Like an airplane wing, only pointed front to back but still, they will exert a tremendous pressure on the rack system. So, do you prize your boards? How would you like to see them in your rearview mirror bouncing down the road? ( I have had customers tell me about the loss of snowboards and skis with suction cup mounts). Better yet, what if the whole kit and cabboodle comes off and scratches the hell out of the car AND damages the boards....not a pretty thought......I would whole heartedly recommend a Thule (square bar) or Yakima (round bar) roof system...they are quality built, and designed to carry specific items and specific "fit" kits for the cars involved. Unless you live down the street from the beach, (5 min ride) I think you are asking for some serious aggravation....IMHO

vacu-rak from T.A.L tech
http://video.yahoo.com/watch/416055/2403301
it is a system of 4 5in discs with a suction device. you place on your roof, turn the key and it creates the vacuum over the 5" disc. to make it work better, i spray a soap solution on the paint before i pull the trigger.
the trick is to align the discs so the board fits between them. once you try it a few times, it becomes easy.
i drive from 08057 to long beach island, about 55 mi at highway speeds. other than an occasional wind vibration from the tie downs, it works fine. never leaves a scratch.
