benefits of 20 over 19

Frankly, I would stay at 18. Keep in mind that regardless of rim size the diameter of the wheel (rim + tire) should remain OEM specs: ~ 25.07". Thus, the larger the rim the shorter the sidewall. The shorter the sidewall the bumpier the ride. And, no, plus sizing wheels does not make the any car look lower. Only specific lowering springs do.

I guess some would say "Looks" as a benefit, but personally, I think the 996 is too small in profile to support 20" wheels. Makes it look like a Hot Wheels car.
20" would typically be heavier wheel/tire combination adding to unsprung weight and adversly affecting handleing. You need some sidewall flex to get good cornering.
19's maybe, but 20's.....not for me.

Do you care about looks or performance?
20's can't be good for performance.
I can't say I'm a fan of the look either, but that's a personal matter. If you like the look and don't care about the cons...
