Thanks. Do you know if I still need the Porsche factory rack and then this unit attachs to it? Some are made that way only, so that other features can be added or taken off for skiis, kayaks, etc. If so, then I am still looking for the factory rack too!

Be careful of the porsche road bike rack. Not long after I left this meet, I took a turn and the bike fell off. thankfully it fell inside toward the middle of the car where the frnot tire mount was.

Will do. Kinda scary to think the rack may not be a good design for bikes or other objects of significant weight!!! Yikes!! Anyone else have problems with the Porsche roof racks??

I have run the following racks:
as well as the previous style:
I've logged literally thousands of miles with those and mountain bikes on them (often with full water bottles, lights, tools etc) including mountain roads and very spirited driving. A properly installed factory rack should be very secure, but I cannot comment on the road bike specific application. I've carried road bikes with the above pictured carriers. They have the added benefit of not having to take off the front wheel.
Your bigger problem may turn out to be removing the placeholder bolts in the roof of your car. About half the MK1 996s I've seen have the screws corroded into the chassis unfortunately, big pain to deal with if yours have done so. By 2002 Porsche switched to plastic screws which don't present a problem.
