Stereo Dilemma -- Update #11 Post -- Installed Alpine HU and Amp
My Bose amp died and Porsche sells remanufactured amps for about $650, new ones are $850. I am thinking about getting an Alpine headunit with Bluetooth and an Alpine 5-channel amp for less than $750. I could then wire it to the existing speakers.
I am the original owner and wonder how this aftermarket unit will affect the resale.
Should I just get the remanufactured amp or go Alpine?
Thanks for any input.

It really depends on who you are selling the car to. Some people will prefer all OEM & will try to deduct from your asking price for it. Other people will see what you have done as a value add and you can ask more for it.

where are you going to get your work done
Thanks for the input guys!

What year is your car? I have the Bose amps that I removed from my 2002 that I would consider selling I'd you're interested.
Resale value does not apply to 996's, LOL
I just ordered an Alpine headunit and some harnesses. They should arrive next week. I will do a basic install to four speakers and then upgrade with an Alpine PDX-5 amp to all of the speakers. The final system will also have Bluetooth/ipod connections.

which parts and harness did you buy? any chance for a diy write up

If everything goes well, I would be happy to help answer your questions.
I opted for the basic set up and intent to upgrade if it goes well. I originally wanted the Nakamichi mb vi headunit because it looked the most factory out of all aftermarket units. This did not seem to be a popular brand anymore, and you cannot add cool features.
I opted for the Alpine CDA-105 because it has 6-channel pre-amps and you can add features including Bluetooth and an ipod connector. Crutchfield.com has a special right now for $150 with free shipping. They also provide one of the harnesses. I had the buy the one that connects to the Bose amp. I'll test this by connecting it to the four 2-way speakers in the dash and rear panels.
I will then get the Alpine PDX-5 amp and wire all speakers to it, putting the front door and subs in series (I hope this works; the ohm should be around 5).
I recall you have the basic CDR-23 without the upgraded system or Bose. I checked out the specs and it looks like your CDR-23 directly powers four speakers. If you don't have door speakers, then I bet you have the no amp and the basic system. You then just have to remove your headunit and install a Metra or Best harness to tap into the factory harness. If you want more power, add some RCAs, speaker wires and amp to the new headunit and you're good to go!

Hi Guys,
Just installed the Alpine headunit and 5-channel amp. I didn't hide the main wiring harness completely because I wanted to keep everything as a "plug-n-play" set up. The harness is too big to move behind the carpet or to the other side of the master brake cynlinder. I did not cut a factory wire or drill into the car. I only cut the firewalls' rubber grommets.
Special thanks: Sanjeev's write up provided great help, and Dave (asialors996) for backup answers to some questions.
I re-wired the Bose subs in series to increase the ohms from 1 to 4. I also used the HU's power to run the rear quarter-panel speakers. The amp is running the fronts on high pass and doors on low pass. The 5th channel is running the subs.
Sounds cleaner and louder than stock, but it could use more bass and clarity. Perhaps upgrading the speakers are next.
Here are some pics:
Four wiring looms for the positive, negative, 6-ch RCAs and the last one for the remote wire & the 2 speaker wires to run the rear-panel 2-ways:
I used a thin piece of wood to mount the amp and painted it black. I then used the factory plug & bolt (used for the Bose amp bracket) to mount the whole piece as one unit:

Looks good. I just replaced everything in mine as well. You will notice HUGE improvement once you do the speakers. Since I have a cab, I put Focal subwoofers into the doors, Morel Hybrid Ovation in the dash and Rainbow Vanadium in the rear.

Replace the whole system. The latest capabilities, bluetooth, Ipod, make it all more up to date and convienient. As for nav forget indash units. Android cell phone with data and google nav out pace the systems that require regular updates.
I predict that the next generation of headunits will have teather capability to link your cell to the internet for streaming audio, video, and the most up to date navigation.
I'm running the Jennert/Porsche door boardsand dash replacement speakers, kenwood HU, Massive 4 channel amp. My cell links to my Motorola Xoom for nav. Awsome - and full internet (with skype) for international calling. BTW - I'm in Germany
