996 LED Tail-Lights

Can anyone recommend a good manufacture of LED Rear Tail-Lights. Over a year ago I bought a set off of Amazon.com and they set Fault Lights and I had to return them. Anyone with a 99-00 996 with LED Tail-Lights?

Use search! all the info is there! They are all manufactured by same company- Amazon or ebay all the same- you may need a relay to avoid the faults- SEARCH

LED's use less energy than bulbs, so in 00 and up, it might give an error. You can use a relay (many vendors sell them with lights) to avoid it. Generally it does not happen in 99's. If you keep adding LED lights (side markers, inside, etc.) eventually all cars will fail as the computer gets confused because the less energy used. Relays can take care of most of it.

Do a search on RennList. It seems that 99, 00, and possibly 01 have no issues at all. Newer cars may need an inexpensive relay to prevent hyperflash. I've read about people saying that you need to add resistors, but others say that's not necessary. All a little confusing but I'll probably take the plunge myself soon.

There is an amazing range of prices charged for these lights, and they are all from the same manufacturer. At fist amazon had them for $214, it has gone up since then. The least expensive I have found is on eBay. Here is a link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...Q5fAccessories

$363 shipped. The least expensive on Amazon right now is $399.

This is from a known ebay vendor, when I inquired about third brake light LED, and doing the rest of the car with LED's including the interiors. He gave a good explanation:

"If you buy the set, just let me know that you want to smoked 3rd brake light. You need the resistors since all your braking related bulbs are LED's. (tail lights and 3rd brake light) The led's only draw about 20% compared to the old bulbs, so they usually confuse the computer. I provide instructions how to install the resistors. They clip on to your two tail light wires. No cutting needed.
For interior LED's you can get away without buying resistors by leaving one of the interior bulbs regular. I changed all my inside lights in my Jeep to leds but it did not work out perfect. It seems like there was a little current in the system, so they all had a little glow on them even when they were supposed to be off. I guess they are so sensitive that even the smallest current lights them up a bit. I would just try it first with all bulbs and if you get the same problem as me, try leaving one regular or maybe even putting in a resistor between one of the lights.
I had the LED side markers on my 996 cab, but they didn't cause problems since my headlights were drawing enough current."

parking light and side marker light is LED.... no problem...
3rd brake light LED...no problem....
maybe i'll run into a problem if I install taillights on top of what I have...

The LED tails are taking less power to run than the previous lights so your car thinks something is wrong by turning on the abs/psm light. what you need is a resistor on each taillight which tricks the computer to think all is good. Do some searching on the right on, but each should be about 10 bucks. This is a common issue with the LED lights. Flasher needed for 02-04 models and resistor needed for 03-04 models. No worries.

I have LEDs in my side markers, parking lights, license plate lights and my 3rd brake light without any problems. If somebody made a nice set of LED brake lights for wide body cars, I'd seriously consider that too.

@Dennis, your car has a threshold of what is an acceptable electrical load putting out to the lights. The led lights you replaced are small single lights that didn't alter your load enough for the car to light up the PSM/ABS lights. But if you did replace the taillights you would need the flasher and resistor due to your year of car. The led taillights have about 30 or so leds in each and would cause this. But due to the widebody you don't need to worry about it anyway. None are available yet. Fingers crossed for you guys.

Thanks for the reply....other forums recommend changing the relay above the fuse box to fix the dash PSM/abs warning light problem,,,,I also noticed that the 3rd brake light which is also led doesn't work (it did work before with the oem tail lights).....any further recommendations?? Thanks..

If you still have the OEM 3rd brake light, re-install it to see if that solves the PSM/ABS warning problem. It probably will. In that case, you'll need to either keep the OEM 3rd brake light or install resistors.

Not at this time. There's a thread on the 996 turbo board about this (they share the same tail lights), but it looks like it will still be a while before something like this is available.
