My first 996, suggestions?

If I were 21 and was given the car I would sell it and pay cash for a nice near-new Acura, Lexus or Infiniti. The fact is most 21 year olds do not have the financial resources to own these cars. You can buy yourself a really nice and super reliable car and it will still look really good compared to most other 21 year olds. In 10 years, when you have a good job, then buy a 911. I know, I know, I am an old fuddie duddie.

You have quite a few options as you can see. Start in order if you like from cheapest mod and work your way up from there. Don't forget you can do LED tail light upgrade for a couple hundred and wheel center caps too.

Congratulations on the car! I would reccomend clear side markers and bumper plugs and the tow hook license plate mounts as inexpensive mods to your car to start with. Perhaps a cold air intake or exhaust? Unfortunately mods for these cars arent cheap and as someone who was also fortunate enough to come into ownership of one of these vehicles at the age of 21 as well I would reccomend saving your money and learning how the car handles and drives. There honestly isnt a car that handles quite as precise and sharply as a 911 (at least not one that I have driven). I find that there are many cars that can match the acceleration of the car but as soon as you involve corners and the twisties you will see how this car excels and outperforms.

Enjoy the driving ...
If you're on limited budget forget mods for now. As other posters said - join Porsche Club (about $50) and register for autocross school or DE event - that will be the most fun you will have in the car in your first year.
If you didn't have recent service or inspection - I'd go to a good local independent Porsche specialist. For $200 you should be able to get oil change and quick inspection for any other problems you should address.
A V1 radar detector might also be good insurance - depending on where you live for around $400.
Tire/Wheel upgrades, shocks, stereo and almost anything else useful will cost you $$$$. I thought about changing the black Targa badge on mine to silver, but didn't even do that yet - just enjoy the drive.
